Werder Bremen goalkeeper Wiese injures knee

Werder Bremen’s Germany goalkeeper Tim Wiese faces a 10-day break after damaging medial ligaments in his right knee during the Champions League draw at FC Twente Enschede, it was revealed on Thursday.

The 28-year-old limped out of his side’s 1-1 draw in Holland on Wednesday night after just 36 minutes, but an MRI scan in Bremen has revealed he has only damaged medial ligaments.

He will be out for at least 10 days and misses his side’s Bundesliga match at Moenchengladbach on Saturday and the German Cup, second round match at Bayern Munich next Tuesday.

“It has confirmed what we already suspected on Wednesday,” said Werder coach Thomas Schaaf.

“We are all just pleased the injury is not worse than it could have been.”

Wiese, who is in the Germany squad, has torn his cruciate ligament twice and told Schaaf almost immediately after the injury that it was not serious.

In his absence, 21-year-old Sebastian Mielitz will take over between the posts.

Germany are top of Group A in their Euro 2012 qualification campiagn and their next game is a friendly against Sweden on November 17.
