The English FA have handed Liverpool striker Luis Suarez an eight match ban after he was found guilty of misconduct.
The Uruguay international received this ban due to racially abusing Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra.
Racism
The English FA are looking to clamp down on racism within the Premier League and this punishment is seen as sending a message to others that racism isn’t acceptable in our game.
As I understand though the case has only been built on what Patrice Evra has stated.
I don’t think this would have been enough evidence in a court of law. Surely there must have been more evidence than just hearsay. Suarez has admitted to saying words that in his country is not offensive but in this country they are.
This ban could also have an effect on the on-going John Terry racism case. The England international was caught on camera allegedly racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand. The Chelsea defender looks set to face criminal charges with the CPS currently investigating the case.
If the Suarez ban is anything to go by Terry could be facing an even longer ban. The FA have to be seen to be treating everybody equally, so if it is proved that Terry is guilty he has to receive a long ban, England captain or not.
Disgusting
Racism is truly disgusting and I thought football had moved on from the bad old days. English football has made a big effort to stamp racism out of the game. Until recently it seemed that the horrible curse of racism had been almost eradicated from the Premier League.
However the unfortunate cases of Suarez and Terry has brought the subject to the fore again. It seems that racism will never die in football. Just like in modern society there are always people who will be prejudice towards people of other ethnicities.
Appeal
Liverpool are likely to appeal Luis Suarez’s eight match ban. The Reds may even challenge the case in court. The Liverpool hierarchy is said to be furious with the punishment handed out to the Uruguayan.
Liverpool have 14 days to appeal the ban and the £40,000 fine and are likely to do it at the first chance they get. They believe that the ban is excessive and that the player is being victimised. I don’t think the Liverpool board are going to take this laying down, rightly or wrongly they are challenging the verdict.
Precedent
The ban given to Luis Suarez sets a precedent for future cases. The FA have to be seen to take a stance against racism and they are right to ban Suarez. However I feel that an eight match ban was a bit excessive (and this is coming from an Everton fan).
Racism should be punished and the FA are attempting to do that. I feel the FA are trying to do the right thing in banning Suarez for eight games. Whether the decision is a right one or not I’m not sure. I’ll let you decide.
Were the FA right to ban Luis Suarez for eight games?
