West Brom claimed a 2-0 victory over Midlands rivals Wolves in the Premier League early kick-off.
The Baggies took the lead in the 8th minute, Billy Jones’ cross found midfielder Chris Brunt who slotted home from 15 yards out.
Nigerian international Peter Odemwingie fired a low shot into the bottom of the corner of the net in the 75th minute after a superb run from Paul Scharner. The victory took West Brom out of the relegation zone and above their rivals.
Mick McCarthy’s men have now lost the last five league games on the trot. Wolves will have to turn their form around quickly or they will be dragged into the relegation dogfight.
Arsenal snatched a late 2-1 victory over Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal took the lead after just 29 seconds, striker Robin Van Persie scored from 18 yards after winger Gervinho had played had played the Dutchman in.
Arsenal looked in complete control but failed to score the second goal. They were made to pay for it in 31st minute. Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta handled the ball outside the area and Sebastian Larsson fired home the resulting free-kick, a fantastic effort from the Swede.
In the 83rd minute Arsenal scored the winner from another free-kick. Arsenal captain Robin Van Persie curled home a fantastic effort into the top corner of the net. Just what the Gunners needed and his celebration showed his commitment to Arsenal’s cause, after speculation over the strikers future.
Sunderland thought they had scored a late equaliser as Connor Wickham found the net, only to see it ruled out for offside. Sunderland’s poor form continues and its worrying times for Steve Bruce and the Black Cats. Bruce could now be living on borrowed time at the Stadium of Light.
This was another game that Arsenal only just scraped a result in and people will still be asking questions about Arsene Wenger and his side. However the three points were much needed.
Newcastle and Tottenham drew 2-2 in a thrilling encounter at St James Park. The game took a awhile to get going but the breakthrough came through in the 39th minute for Tottenham. Emmanuel Adebayor was tripped up by Newcastle defender Steven Taylor and the referee pointed to the penalty spot.
Dutch playmaker Rafael Van Der Vaart fired the penalty into the top right hand corner of Newcastle’s net. The home side drew level in the 48th minute as striker Demba Ba scored from close range from a superb Jonas Gutierrez delivery.
The visitors took the lead in the 68th minute, striker Jermain Defoe somehow finding space and drilling a tremendous effort into the right corner of Tim Krul’s net. Newcastle substitute Shola Ameobi fired a superb effort past Brad Friedel after good play from Hatem Ben Arfa.
Both sides had chances to win the game but neither could find a winner. Neither team deserved to lose the game and it was fantastic entertainment for both sets of fans.
