Aston Villa beat West Bromwich Albion at the Villa Park on Saturday in the first leg of the Championship play-off semifinal by 2-1. The result itself isn’t that bad for the Baggies; they’ve scored an important away goal and trail just by one ahead of the rematch at the Hawthorns.
However, in the second leg, they will be without the man who scored that goal and gave them the lead, before Conor Hourihane and Tammy Abraham (from the spot) turned it around in favour of the home side. Dwight Gayle picked up two incredibly needless bookings and was sent off two minutes from time. The first was for deliberately wasting time with around half an hour to go; the second was for this truly needless foul on Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer, and that after receiving several warnings from referee Graham Scott.
