While the Carabao Cup may not be the most exciting of competitions in the world, when teams get to this stage, they almost always give it their all. That appeared to be the case yet again tonight as West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur battled it out for the right to progress to the quarter-final stage, and in the end, it was the visitors who came away with the victory.
Moving on up
The likes of Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli proved to the world that they’re back to their best in what wound up being a very efficient performance, which isn’t always the case in a competition like the Carabao Cup – aka the League Cup.
Spurs have been floundering somewhat throughout the course of the campaign, especially after their loss against Manchester City, and a great cup run could do them a great deal of good.
Always comfortable
Just over 15 minutes into the first half Son Heung-min reminded fans what he was capable of in his 150th appearance for the club, putting them into a lead that they would hold until full time. Spurs welcomed the imminent pressure from the Hammers and they always looked fairly comfortable, and nine minutes into the second half, it was Son once again who netted to ensure that the pressure was on the hosts throughout the remainder of the final 45 minutes.
Lucas Perez set up a grandstand finish for West Ham, but that didn’t exactly last long with Fernando Llorente smashing in a third goal and demolishing any hope of the Hammers reaching the final eight.
Tottenham will try and take this confidence into the league at the weekend when they take on Wolverhampton Wanderers, whereas West Ham will take on Burnley.
