West Ham United travel to the Stadionul Marin Anastasovici to face Romanian Liga 1 side Astra Giurgui in the first leg of the Europa League playoffs this evening, and are favourites to come out on top to take an aggregate lead to the home leg later this month.

United have had a slow start in the Premier League, suffering defeat in their opening game to Chelsea, but the Londoners have looked more convincing in Europe. Slaven Bilic’s side beat NK Domzale in the third qualifying round to book their place in the playoffs, and will boast a considerably stronger squad than Astra.

West Ham were outstanding away from home in the Premier League last season, and will fancy their chances against an Astra side without much European pedigree. The Romanian hosts have reached the Europa League playoffs in each of the last four seasons, but have only made it to the group stages once.
