Sky Sports is reporting that West Ham United have emerged as favourites to sign Southampton defender Jose Fonte.
The 33-year-old has informed the club chiefs that he wants out this winter and he was subsequently dropped from the senior squad.
Recent reports suggest that West Ham United are close to agreeing a deal with their Premier League rivals that should see Fonte move to the London Stadium.
The Hammers boss Slaven Bilic hopes the arrival of Fonte will improve the back line that conceded 35 goals in 21 Premier League fixtures.
The Portugal international has developed into one of league’s leading central defenders during his time at St Mary’s, making a total of 154 top-flight appearances for the Saints.
With 18 months left to run on his current contract, Fonte decided to consider his options and it looks as though he will now be making the trip to the capital.
