West Ham consider Mats Hummels

West Ham are considering whether to push for the signing of Mats Hummels, who is a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Borussia Dortmund at the end of last season, according to The Times.

The 35-year-old joins Joel Matip, also a free agent after leaving Liverpool, and John Egan, formerly of Sheffield United, on the Hammers’ shortlist as they ponder their options to strengthen their back line with an experienced centre-back. He was previously linked with Brighton and Hove Albion, as well as Bologna and Real Sociedad.

More recently, it was reported Hummels was close to joining AS Roma, but the talks on that front have stalled with his proposed wages believed to have posed a problem. The Serie A side still hope, though, that an agreement still may be found.

West Ham have already signed two centre-backs this summer. Jean-Clair Todibo has joined on loan from OGC Nice and needs just five starts in the Premier League to turn the transfer into a permanent one. Max Kilman has arrived from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a reported fee of over £40 million.
