(GSM) – West Ham United have reportedly dismissed speculation suggesting that they are looking to sell under-fire England goalkeeper Robert Green.
Green, who has come under heavy criticism in the national press following his blunder in England’s 1-1 draw with USA, has been rumoured to be on his way out with West Ham are ready to cash in and replace him with Richard Wright, who has been released by Ipswich Town.
However, West Ham co-owner David Sullivan believes speculation on Green’s future is a cheap shot intended to further undermine his confidence.
He told Soccernet: “It is just total nonsense that we are now trying to find a replacement for Robert Green. It is just not true.
“He is our No. 1 ‘keeper and will remain our No. 1 ‘keeper next season. He’s had a superb season with us and we expect him to be with us for at least the two years left on his current contract.”
Sullivan also hopes Green will be allowed to keep his England place so he can make amends.
“Only the manager can decide who plays Friday night,” he said. “If I was picking the team, it would still be Robert Green. Let’s not forget his great second half save from about seven yards.”
