The Independent understands that West Ham United have been linked with a move for Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen.
The Hammers slipped into the relegation at the weekend following their 3-1 defeat to Newcastle United – their sixth defeat in eight games in all competitions.
They have conceded no less that twenty-five goals in that run, and are desperate to strengthen their back line, which has been decimated by injuries to George McCartney, Guy Demel, Joey O’Brien and Winston Reid.
Vermaelen has struggled to hold down a first team place in Arsene Wenger’s side so far this season due to the continued form of centre-back pair Per Mertesacker and Laurent Kosciely, who together helped the league leaders to yet another clean sheet at the weekend.
The Belgium international has started just six times in all competitions, with just three of those coming in the league, and is keen to keep himself in Marc Wilmot’s thoughts ahead of this summer’s World Cup finals.
