Goal.com today claims that West Ham are set to move for Everton Striker Andy Johnson and will look to sign the ex-Crystal Palace star in order to bolster their options up-front next season.
Johnson, 27, has found his opportunities limited this season due to David Moyes’ tendency to play Yakubu in a lone role up front.
The England international is renowned for his prolific scoring, especially during his time at Crystal Palace where he was arguably the major driving force that saw Palace promoted to the Premiership in 2004.
The striker who began his professional career at Birmingham City with little recognition, can be regarded as one of Crystal Palace’s best transfers, with the striker moving to Selhurst Park for free as part of a deal that saw Clinton Morrison move to Birmingham.
Once at Selhurst Park Johnson hit prolific form, and eventually netted a total of 74 goals in 140 appearances for Crystal Palace and becoming a firm fan favourite.
Johnson may be hard to lure away from Goodison Park, with the striker more likely to try and work his way back into the Everton first-team, however an offer of consistent first-team football could sway the strikers thoughts.
West Ham boss Alan Curbishley is desperately seeking a forward; with star striker Dean Ashton rumoured to be on his way out at Upton Park, Henri Camara returning to Wigan after his loan spell, and Craig Bellamy failing to make a significant impact after his move from Liverpool last season.
West Ham are reportedly prepared to offer £8 million for Johnson, but may find stern competition from a number of Premiership clubs to sign the striker.
