According to Football Insider, West Ham are expected to push hard to sign free agent Joel Matip.
Having lost both Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd this summer, the Hammers are obviously short on options in the heart of the defence. They have Jean-Clair Todibo, Max Kilman and Konstantinos Mavropanos as senior centre-backs, but if any injury problems occur, they’ll be forced to start relying on 19-year-old Kaelan Casey, who has just one Premier League appearance to his name in his career so far.
Manager Julen Lopetegui is understandably keen to address the situation as soon as possible, rather than wait for the January transfer window to open, which means only signing a free agent is a possibility.
This is where Matip comes in. The 33-year-old Cameroonian certainly boasts plenty of experience, having won the Premier League, the Champions League, as well as both English cups, during his time with Liverpool. The Hammers consider him a player that ticks plenty of boxes, though they have some concerns about his injury record.
