A report from the Daily Mirror suggests that West Ham United could be prepared to make a shock move for Rio Ferdinand next summer when his contract at Manchester United is due to run out.
The centre-back is yet to sign a new deal at Old Trafford and Sam Allardyce has said that if he does not agree terms, then he would welcome him with open arms at West Ham.
Ferdinand of course started his career at Upton Park before making a big money move to Leeds United in 2000. He also turns 34 next month, and some believe that Sir Alex Ferguson will look to freshen up his defensive options next summer.
If he does not sign a new contract, then the Englishman is likely to be a target for a number of clubs in the transfer window as he is still a very good central-defender.
The United man does originate from London and may wish to spend the last of his playing days back in the Capital.
The Hammers boss Allardyce said: “If he wants to live back in London eventually, which is where he comes from, which is what quite a few players like to do before the end of their careers then that might be an advantage for us.”
It is likely that he will sign a new deal with the Red Devils, but this is certainly a story so keep an eye on.
