We´re good enough to win the league: Torres

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres insisted Thursday the Reds can win the Premier League this season, saying he came to the club to win trophies and two years without one was hard.

The Spaniard, who recently signed a new contract, said Liverpool have the quality to once again challenge at the top of the table, and even improve on last year’s second-placed finish behind Manchester United.

“The main thing for me and my teammates is to win trophies,” he said at a press conference here after the team’s arrival for a pre-season friendly.

“Liverpool can win trophies again. We have a fantastic squad and maybe this year is more important than the year before.

“Our team can play better than last season and we can win, that is important for me. I came to Liverpool to win trophies and it’s been two years without one which is a long time for Liverpool.

“But I’m sure we can win the Premier League or the Champions League.”

Torres made his first appearance of the pre-season during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Thailand on Wednesday in Bangkok which also saw fellow Spaniards Pepe Reina, Alvaro Arbeloa and Albert Riera taste their first action.

They all returned late to training after playing for Spain at the Confederations Cup in South Africa, but manager Rafa Benitez said he did not think it would be a problem when the season gets underway.

“All the sides have a lot of internationals. It’s part of modern football. Good players are international players,” said Benitez.

“Spain are doing really well at the moment, which is positive for our players and we have others who are doing well for their countries.

“We have to manage them perfectly and that’s what we’ll continue to do.”
