(GSM) – Stoke’s Glenn Whelan and Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen have reacted on the horrific injury sustained by Aaron Ramsey.
Glenn Whelan was the first player to reach the stricken Ramsey and attempted to stop the young Welshman from suffering the trauma of seeing the extent of his injury.
“Everyone involved hopes that the young lad gets back as soon as possible because he looks a terrific player,” Whelan told The Guardian.
“I was the next one in and the lad himself kept trying to look at his leg and I was trying to hide it to take his mind off it. He just kept saying ‘My leg, my leg’. He actually held on to me because of the pain he was going through.”
Thomas Vermaelen admits Arsenal will be doing all they can to land a Premier League winners’ medal for Aaron Ramsey, just like Nicklas Bendtner said yesterday.
Vermaelen was one of the players who witnessed the incident from nearby.
“I saw the tackle and I heard a strange noise,” he said on Ramsey’s horrific injury.
“Afterwards, I saw his ankle. It was not nice to see, especially when it’s a team-mate.
“We have to win every game now and we will do that and will do it as well for Aaron.”
Ramsey would have been expected to feature for his country in Wales’ friendly match against Sweden on Wednesday, with John Toshack revealing his anguish at seeing one of his promising prospects laid low.
The Welsh national team doctors have been in regular contact with Arsenal’s medical staff in regards to the injury and are relieved to hear that initial surgery has suffered no complications.
“Aaron’s surgery has been a success, he has now returned to London and will be in hospital there for a couple of days,” said doctor Mark Ridgewell.
“It looks like things have gone well so far. We have not been told of any immediate complications, they were two clean breaks and there have been no other problems.”
Meanwhile, according to The Daily Mirror, ‘Shawcross and Stoke have spoken to Ramsey, 19, over the last 48 hours to apologise after the incident and it is understood that the young Gunner accepted there was no malicious intent.’
