Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan looks set to leave the capital side this summer.
The 31 year-old has long been linked with a move elsewhere but according to sources in Spain he will move this summer.
A host of top European teams have been tracking him but the big question is where will he end up?
Unsettled
Diego Forlan has allegedly been unhappy at Atletico for awhile now because of the clubs perceived lack of ambition.
He is also believed to have offended some of his teammates because they feel that doesn’t want to play for the club anymore. There is even talk that he isn’t even on talking terms with some of his teammates. This all adds up to one thing and that’s a move elsewhere.
Prolific
There will be no shortage of takers for the Uruguayan international if he should become available this summer. He has been a prolific scorer of goals in La Liga for Atletico Madrid and before that for Villarreal.
He has also scored 29 goals for his country and scored five goals to help his country to the semi-finals of last year’s World Cup.
Failure
To La Liga fans Diego Forlan is a superb striker who can produce moments of brilliance. However to most English football fans he is a failure. He spent an unhappy spell at Manchester United earlier in his career and he became the butt of many a joke about the lack of goals.
He ended up making 63 appearances for the Red Devils and scored ten goals. That record isn’t the greatest but he was quite young when he joined United and much was expected of him. Unfortunately English football just didn’t suit his style.
There have been rumour’s in the English media that the 31 year-old could make a return to the Premier League. The likes of Tottenham and Everton have been linked with the striker but he must ask himself if the English top flight is for him.
Point
Forlan may feel that he has a point to prove and a move to the Premier League this summer would let him prove that point next season. The experience he has gained during his career in La Liga would help him cope with the English top flight, even if it is a completely different style of football.
Italy
Another interesting option for the Atletico star appears to be Serie A. When asked if the Italian top flight interested him he told Gazzetta Dello Sport: “I do not exclude that in the future,”
“If a good offer came to me and the club, a proposal that was not only suitable economically but also from the perspective that it was an important club, (then) I would accept.”
I believe that Italian football would suit Forlan’s style far better than the Premier League. However Forlan is now a different player to the one that was laughed at by the English press in his United career. One thing that looks really unlikely is the striker staying in the capital with Atletico.
Last Chance
At 31 years of age wherever Forlan decides to move needs to be exactly the right move for him as it could be his last big move. I would like Diego Forlan to come back to the Premier League just so he could prove his critics wrong.
I have watched him perform in La Liga for the last couple of years and like many other observers believe he is still a top player.
Where will Diego Forlan end up next?
