Swansea City playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson has been linked to a number of clubs as a result of his outstanding form this season and admitted the interest from suitors has been “very flattering”.
“Of course, it would be a dream to play for one of these big clubs. Hopefully if I continue doing well for Swansea and Iceland then in the near future, I can play in a big club,” he said in a recent interview.
The Icelandic international has been the catalyst of the Swans’ survival push and is expected to be sold in the summer for a hefty price tag. But who will he join?
Everton targeting a Ross Barkley replacement
Everton are searching for a central playmaker with the future of midfielder Ross Barkley unknown. The English international has been told to sign a new contract at Goodison Park or be sold in the summer, meaning the Toffees have to scour a replacement to ensure they aren’t leaving a void in the side.
Sigurdsson was the subject of a £25M offer from Everton in the summer of 2016 but their interest was rebuffed by Swansea. They’re expected to test the waters again at the end of the season and may have more luck this time round. Swansea are resigned to losing many key players given their woes this season, but they will demand lofty transfer fee to ensure they can replace the star players.
Given Everton are seventh in the Premier League this season, sitting behind Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal in the table, the Toffees are the best club for Sigurdsson outside of the elite. It’s a good potential move for both parties with Everton knocking on the door on the Champions League spots while Sigurdsson would be an improvement on Barkley.
Why Gylfi is worth all the fuss
The 27-year-old has enjoyed one of his best seasons of his career in regard to output. Sigurdsson has featured in all 29 Premier League games for Swansea City, scoring eight goals and making 11 assists. The Icelandic international is 1/1 to make the most assists in the Premier League this season, and such performances haven’t gone unnoticed by the masses. Sigurdsson has created 62 chances, more than the likes of Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil, Manchester City’s David Silva and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, among many others.
Sigurdsson is sixth-highest for most chances created and has the most assists so far this season. Swansea are likely to bump up his asking price to potential suitors in the summer, but where will he go? Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with their former player but a starting place wouldn’t be guaranteed.
