Southampton left back Ryan Bertrand has found himself in the middle of a tug of war between the two Manchester clubs, and he is the rope. The two rival teams are currently dominating the Premier League but, rather unusually, both are in need of a left sided defender in January. According to the Guardian it all depends on what sort of transfer fee Southampton decide to ask for.
Reports last month suggested that Manchester United were looking to swap current left back Luke Shaw, who has never succeeded in making it into Jose Mourinho’s good books, for Tottenham defender Danny Rose. However, as if one attempted swap deal wasn’t enough, United now want to offload Shaw in exchange for Bertrand.
Interestingly it was at Southampton that Shaw gained the reputation that earned him a move to Manchester in the first place, and now a glorious return could be on the cards.
However Manchester City also need a left back due to Benjamin Mendy’s injury, and Pep Guardiola has long been a fan of Bertrand. If Southampton don’t ask for an astronomical fee then the England defender could well be wearing blue by the time the January transfer window slams shut.
