Atletico Madrid superstar striker Sergio Agüero announced his decision to leave the club in order to reach his personal football ambitions, at the completion of last season. So far however, the only club to have shown a strong interest in the Argentine are Italian giants Juventus, however surely the hitman would be of an ideal addition to a number of Europe’s best squads in the future.
Let’s take a look at other options for the 23-year-old, and which of Europe’s best club he would suit, if he were to make a move.
Juventus
Agüero would undoubtedly be a fantastic coup for the Bianconeri, as they continue their quest to recover from the Calciopoli scandal that rocked the Italian game back in 2006. Juventus have consistently struggled to compete on all fronts in recent years, and are in desperate need of a world class striker to partner their talismanic captain Alessandro Del Piero up front. Under new coach Antonio Conte, Agüero would play a pivotal role in his 4-2-4 set-up, and could become a successful Juve player for the next decade, if the move does go ahead as planned.
Chelsea
Chelsea have reportedly made a £30 million offer for Brazilian starlet Neymar, but Agüero may be the better option. Having had a few more years of experience at the highest level than the Brazilian, Agüero has already proven himself in Europe, scoring 20 goals in La Liga last season for Atletico. For a club that now demands European success, Agüero would surely have a greater impact than Neymar would. He would also have the chance to reignite a partnership with Fernando Torres, which was never given a solid opportunity to develop when they were together at Madrid.
Arsenal
At Arsenal, the transfer period is threatening to have calamitous repercussions, with Cesc Fabregas, Robin Van Persie, Samir Nasri, Andrey Arshavin and Gael Clichy all linked with a summer exit. Six seasons without a trophy is taking its toll on the playing squad, but what better way to allay these fears than to land the signature of Agüero. Arsene Wenger’s financial principles are admirable in an era of fiscal irresponsibility, but sadly for Arsenal fans it is now a long time since Wenger’s principles paid dividends. Signing Agüero would provide a massive lift to the club, demonstrating to players and fans alike that Wenger is going to do everything within his power to bring success back to the Emirates.
Inter Milan
Away from England, and Inter Milan could do far worse than a player of Agüero’s quality, particularly if their star striker Samuel Eto’o decides to join Manchester City, as has been recently reported. The Nerazzurri have an extremely talented, yet agening striker force, including Diego Milito, who is a player of real class, but suffered from injury that restricted him to a very forgettable season for the club last term. The signing of the 23 year old Agüero would therefore provide Inter with a young and powerful striker, who can fire the club to success as the likes of Eto’o, Milito and Goran Pandev enter the twilight years of their respective careers.
AC Milan
Neighbouring rivals AC Milan completed their recovery from the Calciopoli scandal by winning their first Serie A title since 2004 last season. But the Rossoneri have not yet rediscovered the form that saw them dominate both domestically and in Europe, proven by their embarrassing exit in last season’s Champions League at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur – England’s fifth best side. With the likes of Robinho, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Antonio Cassano and Alexandre Pato at their disposal, strengthening their strike force may not be the club’s top priority at this point, despite being linked with a move for Chelsea’s Didier Drogba. However, if Milan do aspire to win back-to-back Scudetto’s, and a possible eighth European crown, then clearly the signing of Agüero would do their cause minimal harm.
Spain
To Spain, and a transfer to cross town rivals Real Madrid would be an unthinkable move, leaving only Barcelona as a possible choice. The Catalans are close to announcing the capture of Udinese striker Alexis Sanchez however, and should all go according to plan, there would be no need for Agüero, despite his considerable talent. If Agüero wishes to fulfill his ambition of playing for one of the elite clubs in Europe, he will surely have to leave Spain.
Not often does the opportunity arise where a player of such class reveals his desire to leave his club, which the club agrees to. Possibly Agüero’s current involvement in the Copa America has halted interest being pursued for the time being, but one thing is for sure, with that being the 23-year-old will join a top European club this summer.
