Who is to blame for the Liverpool crisis?

Liverpool’s 2-0 weekend derby day defeat to Everton meant that the Merseyside giants finished the day in 19th place in the Premier League.

Liverpool haven’t become a bad team overnight. In recent years there has always been a doubt over the quality of their squad. And in the last few years there has been a doubt over the owners.

Owners

Liverpool now have new owners who the fans hope will take the club forward. They have got rid of the money grabbing Tom Hicks and George Gillett and under new owner John Henry hope to be able to improve their mediocre squad.

Manager

I feel sorry for new Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson. He was given hardly anything to spend in the summer and joined a club with a squad full of average players with a few world class players thrown in. Former-boss Rafa Benitez has been blamed by former-owner Tom Hicks for the mess Liverpool are he might have a point.

Hodgson has brought in midfielder Christian Poulsen, who is quite frankly awful. I was surprised when the Reds signed the 30 year-old because I had seen him play for Juventus and wasn’t overly impressed.

He also brought in a player he knew well from his Fulham days Paul Konchesky. He is a decent player for a side expecting to finish in the bottom half of the Premier League table. However he would struggle to get into a top side but he is Liverpool’s first choice left-back.

Hodgson also signed Portuguese midfielder Raul Meireles from Porto. He looks like he could be a decent signing once he finds his feet in the English game. He has put in some promising performances so far.

The fact that Hodgson has had to sign the likes of Konchesky and Poulsen says a lot about how far Liverpool have fallen behind in terms of financials. They have been forced into signing players that wouldn’t have been fit to wear the Liverpool shirt in years gone by.

Players

Anyway back to Benitez in six years he spent a lot of money by some people’s standards. Unfortunately for Reds fans he bought a lot of mediocre players and players with potential. A lot of the youngsters he bought never fulfilled their potential.

He did sign some decent players. Pepe Reina, Fernando Torres and Daniel Agger are probably the only players who Benitez signed that Liverpool fans could say are good enough for their team.

A lot of his other signings have been awful. It’s like Benitez went out to build an average team and achieved it. He came up with every excuse he could to justify his poor players but quite simply he couldn’t. They just wasn’t good enough and still aren’t.

Not only did he sign poor players but when he had a quality player in Xabi Alonso decided to sell the Spaniard. He then decided to sign Italian benchwarmer Alberto Aquilani. The midfield playmaker struggled to even get on the pitch under Benitez. When Hodgson took his position as boss he allowed the midfielder to return home on-loan to Juventus.

Window

Liverpool are struggling with their current squad but will get out of the relegation zone. However Roy Hodgson and Liverpool fans will be hoping that the club get a substantial transfer kitty in the January transfer window. A lot of people have to take some of the blame for Liverpool’s demise.

Liverpool fans can’t just blame their former American owners because they aren’t the ones out on the pitch every weekend underperforming. Maybe now the old owners are gone everyone at Liverpool can concentrate on matters on the pitch. Now is the time that everyone at the club must stick together or they could be in major trouble.

Who do you think is to blame for the crisis at Liverpool?

look at intermilan right now, with Benitez on the helm, they’re 2nd place 3 points adrift Lazio. But the way the table stands doesnt reflect to how Inter is playing. Inter has been very disappointing lately. That 4-3 win over Hotspurs was a laughable matter and now a draw against Brescia thanks to a contreversial penalty. And lastly, this is what happens when Rafa STILL keeps on critisizing Liverpool and not focusing on his current team. Rafa is not a saviour but a wrecker.

Eafa was undoubtily the cause of Liverpools Downfall The team that won the european cup was basicly Houlliers team
Rafa’s only contribution was to buy 2nd class players apart from Torres, He bought so many duds that he had to introduce the rotation policy then suddenly the top players were tired from playing too much football. Which led to frustration from the directors and confusion amoung the players with his various systems and divided the fans.
He cost the club a fortune with changes in staff mostly imported and the costs that carries. Then he screwed the club into a contract renewal he also blamed everyone and it was never his responsibility.
    Good riddance

That’s a real big shocker, thinking of Liverpool getting relegated. And this coming from a Manchester United fan.

i agree with edward. pointing fingers at this point is irrelevant. I do hope that the new owners will be able to rejuvinate Liverpool and hope that they don’t get relegated.

I’m not so sure who’s to blame. Rafa is one of them, but maybe the selling of Xabi Alonso screwed them up so much that it wouldn’t matter whether or not Rafa or someone else was coaching the Reds.

they are ECC champions way back 2005, that alone can attract players to the club. But what did Benitez do ?? He got mediocre players. And besides, every week he is changing his tactics. No continuity. He failed to keep Liverpool afloat. It’s funny how he blame the director, for me, Benitez is full of excuses and nothing more.

Sorry Chris I didn’t completely blame Rafa. You haven’t read the article properly. Liverpool haven’t got money because Benitez spent it on the likes of Lucas and Alberto Aquilani.

Were they cheap good signings? And Chris who is to blame for the Liverpool’s demise then? And I think you’ll find the other comments on here actually say that Benitez is to blame for your teams demise.

Chris you’re wrong. Rafa is to blame! He spent sooooo much many on bad players and didn’t invest enough in the youth. We have no youth!!! Our only young players who will be good in the future are Jay Spearing, Jonjo Shelvey, Danny Wilson, and Nate Eccleston. But guess what? They’re no good right now!!! Rafa signed a bunch of players who were beyond their time with a few exceptions (torres, reina, mascherano). Rafa pissed off the board and pissed off the players. He constantly ruined the team chemistry of Liverpool!!! It seems that every week he was manager another Liverpool player would speak out about being insulted by Benitez or being utterly confused by him. RAFA IS TO BLAME and there is absolutely no doubt about it. …and Hodgson for the love of god…PLAY THE YOUTH!!!!

i have to agree that it was Benitez that’s to be blamed for Liverpool’s downfall. No offense to him, but he is so full of himself. Just becoz he won the ECC that he thinks he’s the best coach in the world. Like most players say, getting to the top is easy, but staying there is difficult. It’s insulting to see the he is now in InterMilan.

    Interesting article…full of garbage also…

Funny how last year people tipped Liverpool for the league…and if you didn’t you knew would would challenge seeing as nearly won the league the near before…

Regarding blaming rafa still for the demise for the club…is laughable

One bad season and all of sudden rafa has accumulated an average bunch of players…with one or two good signings…please…just tell us you just don’t like rafa then ill understand, quit reading tabloids to make up an opinion…
This is common sense, Liverpool could not complete in the market as they had nothing t spend….do you know the difference between the 09 and 10 Liverpool team? Alonso. ANother great signing you forgot to mention…now are you telling me alonso leaving caused a massive drop from 86 points and 2nd to 7th and an average squad? Wheres the logic in that?

You clearly have no memory and have read far too many papers
