A number of the top managers in the Premier League, including Manchester United’s Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger don’t like signing players in the January transfer window.
I believe it was Fergie that said he couldn’t get quality players for a reasonable price in winter transfer windows.
Well this January has proved that you can get quality players at reasonable prices and some of those players have change their teams seasons.
Here are just some of those players:
Nikica Jelavic ( Everton)
The big Croatian striker has proved a sensation for Everton since his £5.5million move from Scottish giants Rangers. After arriving injured he has now fired home five goals in his ten appearances for the Blues, including a crucial goal at Sunderland in the FA Cup semi-final.
He seems to be the sort of player that Everton have been crying out for seasons. Everton have lacked a finisher in recent years and Jelavic looks like he could be the answer to David Moyes preys.
There were questions marks over whether he could cut it in the Premier League before he arrived but I think he is already proving that he is more than capable of holding his own in the English top flight. He will be looking to help Everton to the FA Cup final with the Blues facing arch-rivals Liverpool in the semi-finals on Saturday
Papiss Cisse (Newcastle)
A lot has been said about the Senegal international since his reported £9million move from Bundesliga side Freiburg. He has simply been a goal machine in his first few months on Tyneside. The striker has scored ten goals in just nine Premier League appearances since joining the club.
Cisse looks like yet again great signing from Newcastle after they secured the services of compatriot Demba Ba on a free transfer in the summer. Courtesy of Cisse’s goals Newcastle are now in with a realistic chance of making it into the Champions League.
Steven Pienaar (Everton)
Another great piece of business from Everton boss David Moyes. The South African returned to Goodison from Tottenham on-loan in the final minutes of the transfer window. Its no coincidence that Everton’s form has picked up since his return to the club.
The 29 year-old has provided a cutting edge and creativity that Moyes side were previously lacking. His form has help Everton climb into seventh place in the Premier League, above local rivals Liverpool.
Pienaar looks far happier at Everton then he did at Tottenham. The midfielder struggled for minutes on the pitch at White Hart Lane but has fitted into the Everton team like he had never been away.
I’m sure Moyes is doing everything he can to make the deal a permanent one. Tottenham’s loss has definitely been Everton’s gain. It’s just unfortunate that Pienaar is cup-tied and won’t be able to play in the semi-final against Liverpool.
Pavel Pogrebnyak (Fulham)
The Russian striker arrived at Fulham in January on-loan, after falling out of favour at Bundesliga side Stuttgart. The 28 year-old has scored five goals in just seven games and has already made himself into a cult hero at Craven Cottage.
The Russian international seems like a natural born goal scorer and he was just what Fulham needed.
His contract with Stuttgart expires in the summer and his agent is currently in negotiations with Fulham about making his stay at Fulham a permanent one. Aston Villa are also believed to showing an interest but the big striker seems happy at Craven Cottage.
Proof
All these players have been superb for their new teams and have proven that there are bargains out there for teams, even in the dreaded January transfer window.
