Who will Arsenal sign now that Fabregas has left the club?

The longest running transfer saga in the history of football was finally completed yesterday as Cesc Fabregas joined Barcelona in a deal believed to be worth £35million.

The deal has been on the cards all summer but has now finally been completed.

Others

It doesn’t look like the Spaniard will be the last out of the Emirates Stadium exit door this summer.

It seems that French midfielder Samir Nasri will be heading to Manchester City and utility player Emmanuel Eboue is set to join Turkish club Galatasaray.

With all these exits Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will now be forced to strengthen his squad. The Frenchman isn’t a big fan of spending money. If Arsenal are going to be a success then Wenger must now strengthen his squad.

He will now have a substantial transfer kitty to spend on bringing in new players. The question is which players will Arsenal bring in?

Defenders

Phil Jagielka (Everton)

Everton have already turned down a £10million bid from the Gunners for the England centre-back. However Wenger could now go back to Everton with an improved bid. Everton are believed to want close to £20million for the defender but Wenger is unlikely to spend that much on a player who is nearly 29 years of age.

Per Mertesacker (Werder Bremen)

The German international centre-back could be available for a knockdown fee with his contract set to expire next summer. Werder officials have admitted that they would be willing to sell the beanpole defender this summer.

The giant centre-back is just the sort of player that the Arsenal backline is crying out for. A strong, tall and commanding player to boss the defence. Werder Bremen are believed to value Mertesacker in the £6million bracket. He would be a bargain buy for the Gunners at that price.

Gary Cahill (Bolton)

Arsenal have been linked with the Bolton centre-back for awhile and it looks like the Gunners will finally make their move before the transfer window shuts. Cahill is also an England international and is rated in the £17million bracket by Wanderers.

Midfielders

Jadson (Shakhtar Donetsk)

With Arsenal set to be short of midfield options with the loss of Fabregas and the imminent departure of Samir Nasri the Gunners are now looking at potential replacements. Brazilian playmaker Jadson is one of the players that Arsenal are believed to be interested in signing.

The 27 year-old is the hub of the Shakhtar midfielder and part of a huge Brazilian contingent at the Ukrainian champions. Shakhtar boss Mircea Lucescu has revealed that the English side have made enquiries about the talented midfielder.

Wesley Sneijder (Inter)

The Gunners have been linked with the Inter superstar but I just can’t see this deal happening. Inter seem to be willing to sell the midfielder. If reports are to be believed the club have yet to received any suitable offers though.

Signing Sneijder would be a signal of intent to the rest of Europe that Arsenal are not just there to make up the numbers this season. Wenger however is unlikely to meet Inter’s valuation of £35million to sign the Dutch international.

Juan Mata (Valencia)

According to reports the Gunners are close to agreeing a deal to sign the Spanish international playmaker. The World Cup winner has a release clause of £17.5million in his contract. Arsenal will have to meet that to capture the players signature.

Juan Mata would definitely be a good addition to the Arsenal squad. He has vision, intelligence and the ability to score goals as well.

Striker

Carlos Tevez (Manchester City)

This link was a rather strange one considering that Carlos Tevez wants to move closer to his family in Argentina. However Tevez was linked with a move to Arsenal in exchange for Samir Nasri. Arsenal’s hierarchy have since denied there was anything in the story.

Difficult

It is difficult to predict who Arsenal will sign due to the reluctance of Arsene Wenger to spend money. Indeed the Frenchman may not dip into the transfer market at all. It must be frustrating to be a Arsenal at the moment. And I can’t see it getting any better for the Gunners faithful anytime soon.

Who should Arsene Wenger sign this summer?

9 new players that, without a doubt, strengthen the squad…they all signed at an approximate total of 43million…that’s 1million more than PSG’s signing for Pastore…smart spending. Whether it translates in to trophies, or a champions league qualification, is another story…but I think it’s enough to keep Arsenal going until they can gain more leverage in the transfer market.

arsenal should not be stressed about losing one player the team will be strong without fabregas he would have not be a star without ather players.now they have to show their ability to their fans that they are also important in team and they can do it

@Ben…haha…I know I know…you’re right. It is a gamble believing Arsenal have the talent to support a 4th place, or better finish in the EPL this season…but I’m not a gambler or a risk-taker…maybe more naive, conservative and idealistic than anything.

I want to see Chelsea win trophies and I want to see this sport evolve and be around forever…I just hope things don’t spiral out of control b/c a lot of activity in the transfer market is just outrageous these days…but, as long as there is a demand, there will be a supply, so as they say, join them if you can’t beat them…

Unsustainable spending is not good for the fans….

With the exception of Portsmouth and Leeds, I’m doubt fans of Man City, Malaga, PSG and even Chelsea (who I also happen to support) will seriously worry about the sustainability of the sport when they see the trophies roll in.

A minor point is that socialism is a blend of communism and capitalism. Any blend of the two is still socialism.

You and Mr Wenger must be gambling men to risk the short and long term future of the club on the chance they will qualify for the Champions league without bolstering he squad. Also, they are a 1-0 deficit and penalties away from the Europa league this season. When leaders on the team are the young and inexpirienced Wilshire and Ramsey and the brittle Vermallan and Van Persie, I don’t give them much chance. Being the best feeder team in Europe doesn’t help when you’re selling to your direct competitors.

@Ben…I hear your point and if my thoughts are ‘unqualified’ so be it…if things can work out the way you see it, then everyone is happy and cheers to that.

But I don’t think diving in to the transfer market for star players right now will benefit the club going forward…I do think they should spend, but not just yet.

I just think the market is so distorted when it comes to valuing players that Wenger is smart to hold out and wait and work at having this current squad qualify in the top 4…I think it’s achievable and my point of view is based around that…you don’t think they can qualify for top 4, which is reasonable, and so you say they must spend now…makes sense…but assuming that they can qualify in the top 4 and hold out just long enough to find the right players at the right price, then it’ll be well worth the wait. When Javier Pastore is selling for more than Fabregas, something is wrong in the market.

UEFA’s new rules blends capitalism and socialism…it’s not completely one or the other so I don’t think it will have the same repurcussions as socialistic governments have experienced. It is simply forcing clubs to manage their cashflow to ensure financial stability. With socialism comes tax gouging which hinders spending and I don’t see where this is happening except when clubs are penalized for running deficits. Clubs are free to spend all their earnings as they please but leaving clubs free to spend beyond their means is not healthy and can only last for so long. It’s not good for the sport and most important, it’s not good for the fans.

If you have to spend, you have to spend, but I just don’t think it’s the right time… obviously, the priorities will need to be weighted again come January transfers if Wenger sees the club falling short of a top 4 finish. But, i’m not even an Arsenal fan and I think they can finish top 4 now that the dead-weight is gone…real players will step up and I think Arsenal have a few waiting in the shadows…

Who are you to qualify how individual clubs and coporations spend their money. If their fans demand titles, they will try to supply it. Europes predictament is due to their cradle to the grave entitlements, international interdependence,, and lack of capitalistic policy. These new Financial Fair Play laws are not unsimilar to a socialistic system, and were seeing at a national level how that story ends.

Surely with Mr. Wenger’s PHD will grant him the knowledge that Arsenal cannot afford to not qualify for the Champions league. His failure to acknowledge that his squad will not compete for a top four spot will ultimately cost the club in the long run. Since Arsenals last trophy (2005 FA cup), they have made a 54 million pound profit. However, when they fail to qualify for the Champions league, they will lose the 20 million pound windfall payments. In addition, the loss of prestige from selling their two best players and the lack of top flight football will hinder their ability to attract the best talent. This eventually leads to lower ticket prices, merchandise, overseas appeal, and TV deals. If Arsene would stop acting like the clubs bookkeeper and instead focus on winning like the manager should, they will be fine. With the emerging Manchester City taking their 3rd place spot last year, and Tottenham and Liverpool strengthening, Arsenal will be lucky to take 5th.
With regards to Chelsea’s long term financial viability, they are fine. Uefa financial fair play rules state that clubs must balance incoming transfers and salaries with the likes of tickets, merchandise, transfers fees, etc. by the 2013-14 season. However, clubs are allowed to have losses of up to 40 million pounds for the next three seasons. Between Abromovich’s wealth, their increased presence in the USA and Asia, and the upcoming lucrative TV deals, they will be fine. I am also curious to see the inevitable showdown between the first big club and Uefa when they break their ridiculous attempt at parity.

@David…I can only thank all of the writers at Soccernews.com for keeping us informed with this information – so, THANK YOU and keep up the good work!

I do understand the frustration with Arsenal fans, but keep in mind that big clubs are operating way beyond their means right now and they will suffer down the road (very soon) once UEFA makes it a level playing field for all…

Arsenal have a philosophy of doing things proper…they play good/clean football, they have proper business practices, they support the grassroots by constantly scouting and developing young talent and they compete on all fronts. There is not much more you can ask for except for trophies…but they are being priced out of winning trophies if you ask me.

It’s good to see that they are standing firm and not supporting the madness that Roman and others seem to indulge in…

Imagine: FIFA reported that there was approximately 330million Euros spent on transfers this year up until August and the IMF has reported that numerous European countries are on the verge of bankruptcy…smh. I have a few ideas as to where those Euros might have been more useful.

Chelsea might win trophies here and there, but i’ll tell you, as a Blues fan, we have none of the attributes and practices of a sustainable club, which is a worry to me.

I think everyone on Wenger’s case should just chill out for a minute and let the man do his thing…his long-term vision for the club is right on point and Arsenal are in a position to exploit UEFA’s new financial fair-play rules more than 99.99% of the clubs out there…

Gunners are turning a profit over year after year…they will have a greater capacity to spend over other clubs very soon…once the rules come in to effect, I would expect players and clubs to begin lowering their valuations to accommodate deals and Arsenal will be in a position where they have more to offer, financially, than most…Real Madrid and Manchester United will probably be the only two clubs somewhat immune from the rules b/c they generate so much revenue they can still afford to bring a lot of high-quality players. But there are very few clubs, if any, outside of this small circle.

Gunners fans should ride this out and take the losses as they come…let all the other clubs buy everyone and spend enormous amounts of wages on them…when the bomb hits, and club expenditures are all tied up in player wages, no one will be able to afford to sign a player and Arsenal will be right there with their pockets oozing out cash…I might be wrong, but that’s how I see this playing out so far.

I am very concerned as to how Chelsea will manage the financial rules…as it is, we’re operating at a loss, which means no Champions league until that’s fixed…believe me, Arsenal’s short-term outlook seems tragic, but many other clubs have a long-term tragedy to deal with that I don’t believe they are prepared for just yet…

It’s tough love, but Wenger is doing the best thing for the club…trust!

Wenger is still living in the past. 5 years without a silverware and he is still talking like a professor of soccer. We need results and not cheap talk. We can’t allow Wenger to go with the glamour and glory of Arsenal. He has to be told in no uncertain terms that without silverware this season, the door is wide open for him no matter his past record. Arsenal must move on; with or without Wenger.
