After the exit of boss Jose Mourinho to Real Madrid European champions Inter are now on the lookout for a new head coach. The next boss will have a lot to live up to after the Nerazzurri completed the treble last season.
Obvious
Mourinho’s departure wasn’t a big surprise and his destination won’t be a surprise either. The Inter board must have contingency plans for this outcome. They must have a shortlist of prospective replacements for ‘The Special One’.
Candidates
A host of top bosses have been linked with the top job in Italian football. The latest is ex-Catania boss Sinisa Mihajlovic, who quit the club on Tuesday. The former-Inter defender is highly-rated in the coaching world and helped his former club finish in 13th in Serie A last season. Mihajlovic has also been in talks with Fiorentina about becoming their new head coach.
Current Fiorentina boss Cesare Prandelli is expected to quit the Viola to replace Italian national team boss Marcello Lippi after this summer’s World Cup in South Africa. Prandelli was said to be in the running to replace Mourinho but it looks like he has decided to move into international football instead.
England coach Fabio Capello has already revealed that he is committed to England and won’t be the new Inter boss. Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni has also revealed that he wants to stay in his current position.
Inter star playmaker Wesley Sneijder has told the press that he would like countryman Guus Hiddink to take the vacant managerial position. Hiddink is an experienced campaigner with a history of success in club football but has decided to take the Turkey job. He would be a popular choice amongst the fans if Inter could persuade him to do dual roles.
Players
The first task on the new Inter bosses agenda will be to persuade his stars players that their futures are at the San Siro. Mourinho’s arrival at Real Madrid is also expected to trigger a mass exodus of players.
There have already been rumours linking Real Madrid with moves for Brazilian right-back Maicon and Dutch midfield ace Wesley Sneijder. The Holland international has denied the rumours and has revealed that he wants to stay at the club and doesn’t wish to return to the Bernabeu.
Argentinian international striker Diego Milito, who scored the goals that won Inter the European Cup, has now been linked with a move away from the club. The 30 year-old has proved a revelation since joining Inter from Genoa last summer, scoring 30 goals in all competitions last season.
Momentum
The new man at Inter will have the advantage of taking over a team at the top of their game. They continue to dominant Serie A and have now finally made an impact on Europe’s top competition. The new man will need to carry on from where Mourinho left off at both home and abroad.
The Portuguese casts a big shadow and it will take a big man to fill his shoes with any great success. Some would say that it’s almost an impossible task to replace Mourinho but there is no shortage of managers up for a challenge.
