Newcastle are about to enter a new era after boss Alan Pardew left for Crystal Palace.
The former-West Ham boss seemed to divide opinion amongst Magpies fans and even chairman Mike Ashley did not seem willing to back Pardew.
That lack of support for Pardew seems to have led to the experienced boss returning to his former-club.
Newcastle now needs to find a replacement for Pardew, with reports suggesting that the Magpies could identify candidates for the role in the next 48 hours.
Here are some of the candidates linked with the vacancy:
Remi Garde
The current favourites with the majority of the bookmakers is former-Arsenal midfielder Remi Garde, who is odds of 7/2 to become the next Magpies boss.
The 48-year-old’s managerial career consists of a three year stint at Lyon, where he won the French FA Cup and French community shield. The former-French star left Lyon last year citing personal reasons.
Tim Sherwood
Former-Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood has been linked with seemingly every Premier League vacancy since he left Spurs last summer. He did a decent job at White Hart Lane after replacing Andre Villas-Boas mid-season.
Under Sherwood, Spurs equalled their club-record points total in the Premier League. However that role at Tottenham is his only managerial stint, yet he is relatively highly-regarded as a coach and seems determined to become a top-flight boss in the near future.
Steve McClaren
The former-England boss is probably the highest-profile name being linked with the vacancy. McClaren has experienced mixed fortunes in his managerial career. He was successful in Holland with FC Twente, after an ill-fated stint in charge of the England national team.
A stint in German was not as successful as his spell in Holland. He also failed to fulfil expectations at Nottingham Forest. However, he seems to have resurrected his managerial career at Derby, who currently sits third in the Championship.
The Rams hierarchy have denied that McClaren is going anywhere and that their boss is completely committed to the club.
John Carver
The current caretaker and Pardew’s former-assistant boss has made it known that he wants the job on a permanent basis. His record during the games he has taken on as caretaker is not great and his only permanent role was as boss of Toronto FC in the MLS and lasted just over a year in the role.
He looks like an unlikely appointment given his lack of real managerial experience, despite the fact that the role in the north east is likely to be more of a head coach than a manager. He is a local, but does not seem like a popular choice.
Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is known for being careful with his money and Carver would be a cheap option.
Glenn Hoddle
Hoddle is another former-England boss being linked with the role on Tyneside. Hoddle is currently on the coaching staff at QPR. The 57-year-old has not had a managerial role since leaving Wolves in 2006.
However, the experienced boss has stayed around football in the guise of a pundit for Sky Sports. He returned to football in 2014 as a first team coach at QPR. Hoddle has enjoyed little success in his managerial career.
Eddie Howe
Howe is regarded as one of the brightest young British bosses in the game. The 37-year-old’s current team Bournemouth are topping the Championship table and playing some good passing football. Despite being a centre-back during his playing career his team play some very expansive football.
The relative youngster in managerial terms has twice guided Bournemouth to promotion and is regarded as a hero by Cherries fans. A cautionary note with Howe is the fact that he endured an ill-fated stint at Burnley, prior to returning home to his former-club.
Opportunity
The Newcastle job may be a tough one, but the Magpies are a big club. There is quality within their ranks and the Magpies are currently sitting in the top-ten of the Premier League, reportedly Mike Ashley’s target for the season.
Newcastle is a sleeping giant and just waiting for the right person to wake them up. Pardew guided the Magpies to fifth position in the top-flight, so there is scope for the Magpies to improve and finish in a decent position in the Premier League table.
