Who will replace Fabio Capello as England boss?

England boss Fabio Capello has quit his post after a meeting with the English football association.

The former-Roma boss was expected to leave his post this summer after the European Championships.

It was widely acknowledged that the Italian wouldn’t be offered a new contract and that is believed to be one of the reasons behind his somewhat surprise departure.

The Italian has stated that he won’t reveal the details behind his departure.

Timing

The timing behind the decision seems strange with the team set to take part in a major tournament in June. The Italian was expected to lead England in Ukraine and Poland but he obviously had other ideas. It now leaves the FA with a big decision to make before Euro 2012.

It’s not an ideal time to hire a manager with the Premier League season still in full swing. Most top managers will be reluctant to leave their posts. Despite the timing there are still a number of candidates for the role.

Harry Redknapp

The Tottenham boss is favourite for the job and he has been for along time. He has the experience of managing at the top level for a number of years and is regarded as the best English manager around. He has built a fantastic team at Tottenham with a large number of England players in his squad.

With Tottenham 3rd in the Premier League though its hard to see him quitting his job. He has started to build a legacy at White Hart Lane and I think he would find it hard to leave that behind. The lure of the national team job may just be too much for him though.

Alan Pardew

The Newcastle boss is another boss who is flying relatively high in the Premier League. His Newcastle team have been the surprise package of the season and are currently challenging for a Champions League spot this season.

He endured difficult spells at Charlton and Southampton in the lower leagues before revitalising Newcastle. His appointment seems unlikely as he has stated he doesn’t want the job. However things change very quickly in football and he could have a change of heart.

Roy Hodgson

The vastly experienced West Brom boss has done a superb job with the Baggies after a terrible spell with Liverpool. Hodgson has extensive experience of world football having managed both domestic and international teams on the continent.

Hodgson has even worked for UEFA in an advisory role. Hodgson definitely has some of the right credentials but his short-spell at Anfield may persuade the FA that he isn’t the man to cope with big egos.

Stuart Pearce

The England under-21 boss has been part of the England setup for along time and is considered as a future England boss. Pearce has worked under many England bosses and knows the international setup. However the former-Manchester City boss is not considered experienced enough to manage the national team just yet.

Jose Mourinho

The Real Madrid head coach has never hidden his love of England and English football. The Portuguese boss also looks set to leave the Spanish giants this summer. Mourinho is without doubt one of the most talented managers to ever grace a football dugout.

The self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ would certainly be a popular choice with the fans. However the English FA may not look too kindly upon his controversial behaviour and press conferences.

Arsene Wenger

The Arsenal boss has done a lot for the game in England but has suffered fierce criticism of his management this season. The Frenchman is in the process of trying to rebuild his team and has a reputation for developing young players.

Wenger has also been linked with a summer move to Real Madrid if Mourinho departs. Wenger has a good knowledge of the world game but it remains to be seen if he wishes to manage at international level.

Quickly

The FA need to act fast in appointing the next England manager. The European Championships starts in just over four months and the new boss will need time to settle into the role. Whoever the new man is will have a big job on their hands.

Who will be the next England boss?
