Who do we think will win La Liga?
I suppose it is absolutely certain that either Barcelona or Real Madrid will lift the La Liga trophy at the end of the season. Is it worth looking any further and investigating the credentials of Valencia or Sevilla or Atletico Madrid or Villarreal or any of the others? No, it isn’t. It will be Real or Barca.
Won
Only three times in the last thirteen seasons has the league been won by anyone other than the big two. They are almost guaranteed to finish first and second this season, but the big question is, which way round will they be?
The reigning champions are of course Barcelona. In fact, they are pretty much the reigning champions of everything and it will be an almost impossible task to repeat the overwhelming success of last season. Pep Guardiola must think that management is really simple after winning La Liga, the Spanish Cup and the Champions League in his first ever season as a boss.
Disruptive
So far in the summer they have swapped an allegedly disruptive Samuel Eto’o, who had been a great servant for the club but may have come to the end of his useful time, for the enigmatic Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is regarded as one of the best but still has much to prove at a European level.
Guardiola has also bought in defender Maxwell and Brazilian starlet Keirrison, but has been fairly inactive in the transfer market. Whilst that may surprise some people, you only have to look at the quality of the players already at his disposal to see that very few improvements were required.
Sweat
Let us not forget that Barcelona won the Champions League final without breaking into a sweat against Manchester United and they had influential centre-half Rafael Marquez missing through injury, Daniel Alves and Eric Abidal suspended and Thierry Henry and Andres Iniesta playing with injuries.
Whether more new signings arrive or not, that squad will take some beating.
Inactive
Real Madrid, on the other hand, have not been inactive in the transfer market. Defender Raul Albiol arrived from Valencia whilst the big name arrivals include Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema. An outlay of around €210 million, and no doubt, considerably more by the time this article is published.
There is no doubt that Real Madrid President, Florentino Pérez, is determined to buy success on the field for his club. New manager Manuel Pellegrini will have the enviable but potentially difficult job of trying to mould all of the undoubted talent at his disposal into the coherent and successful team that Perez demands.
Gel
It will be interesting to see how all of these amazing footballers at one club can gel together, especially as most of them seem to be forward or forward thinking players.
It will be fun to watch and it would be great for Spanish football if they could forge themselves into a team capable of giving Barcelona a serious run for their money this season.
It will probably be close, but I think Barcelona will have enough class and are an established enough team to see off the challenge.
