Who will win the Premier League? Are the bookies right?

Graham Fisher in Editorial, English Premier League 24 Jul 2010

Two horse race?

There was an interesting vote recently on Sky Sports whereby people were asked who they thought would win the coming season’s Premier League.

Regain

Over 50,000 people voted online and 26% of them, 12,500, think that Sir Alex Ferguson will lead Manchester United to regain their title.

Sir Alex just missed out on a fourth consecutive Premiership title and we all know that he and his team are at their most dangerous when they think they have a point to prove.

Equal

Equal second in the vote were champions Chelsea and Roy Hodgson’s Liverpool who each picked up 19% of the vote.

Chelsea were the best team by a distance last season and I think they must be favourites to retain the title. The only thing against them is the fact that the likes of Terry, Lampard and Drogba aren’t getting any younger and maybe those crucial players might be past their best.

Abysmal

As for Liverpool, they were abysmal last time out but with Joe Cole on board and a revitalised Steve Gerrard and being led by a wily old manager like Roy Hodgson, hopes will again be high this season. I’m sure Hodgson would settle for a top four finish.

15% of the voters went for Arsenal. Good though Arsenal are, I can only assume that these voters consisted almost entirely of Arsenal fans!

Chance

Less than 10%, 4,600 people, think that big spending Manchester City will win the league. Whilst it is a big jump to come from outside the top four to suddenly win the title, City will surely be thinking that with their personnel, signings and spending power, they have a chance. Clearly the football public don’t think so.

If you look at the Bookmaker Sky Bet odds, it is clear that they believe the title is a two-horse race. Bookies are rarely wrong! Chelsea are the 6/4 favourites from Manchester United at 9/4. Manchester City are third in the betting at 5/1 from Arsenal (7/1) and Liverpool (11/1).

Agree

It is interesting to see that the bookies agree about Chelsea and United being the two favourites, but then disagree about the prospects for Manchester City and Liverpool.

I’m pretty confident that those five teams will be the top five, as I’m sure most of you are.

I reckon the order will be, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal.

What do you think?

nope. ur wrong, Rooney’s the main man at Manchester United, Liverpool’s SUPERIORS for nearly 20 years. Rooney will score at least 20 goals this season.

Javier Hernandez, Chris Smalling. . . and I think that’s it for Fergie’s latest signings.
but there’s always a good reason for being signed if you end up playing for SAF at Old Trafford. He doesnt just do it to waste money or get the quid from the jersey sales. . . . . . . .

Im as big as a manchester united fan as you will find anyway but, at the moment I really think Manchester need to get their act into gear, and sign some players.
If u loose one season, U know that u need to strengthen the squad 4 the next year?
Come on Fergie…… Who’s in store for us this year.
At this point in time City really need to Sign some great deffenders.
Toure, Lescott, Boatang they need some soild partnerships at the back.
Liverpool i think r the dark horse to watch out for.
Chelsea have made no real Big signings, but have let a number of big named players leave the team.

CFC Fan has some good points, this season might just be far more exciting than any other season previous. The Manchester sides will be at each others throats (even more than the norm), Everton might just be able to overcome Liverpool, Spurs have qualified for the CL, and will not just be happy they’ve broken into the Big Four.

Chelsea have lost a couple of players, most notably (duh) Ballack and Cole, so that might hurt them a bit but they still have Drogba, Anelka, and co., and they might end up (though as a Red Devil, I hope not) repeating.

all in all, maybe even more exciting than last season. now, if we can just get the new campaign started.

In my opinion, the EPL drama and soap opera will come down to 3 teams – City, United and the Spurs. City are under immense pressure to perform and have the talent to do it…United are not any better than last season from what I can see, but SAF has an agenda and I’ll never write him off until he calls it quits. Javier was a good addition too…and the brilliant Harry Redknapp has a lot of tricks up his sleeve right now that I can’t wait to see…also, with the Toffees back at full strength (not sure on Pienaar’s status tho) they’ll be sure to upset and be in contention for a top spot, which means somebody else will take a hit and fall…I can’t wait for this to start!

While these teams have gotten better, Chelsea have not…in fact, Chelsea have taken a step back b/c players have left, nobody has been signed, Ramires doesn’t look like he’ll make it to the EPL, Benayoun is not going to change games alone, and the entire squad is older than the old they were last season – it’s not looking good but with the right inspiration, Chelsea will trump them all! Win or lose it’s Chelsea 4 life!

Every season people say arsenal will be the team that slides down, and every season they are wrong… Seriously, liverpool getting tipped for 2nd? Thats the most ridiculous thing ive ever heard of, a revitalised gerrard and joe cole making the difference, what a laugh! As usual everyone will be wrong about arsenal falling down the ladder. Its weird that people think that a young team with such a small average age, will get worse season after season.. it just comes down to people hating. You can even see it in the authors article, clearly makes fun of arsenal claiming its probably only arsenal fans voting for them.. As if a manutd fan will vote for chelsea to win, what a joke!

Hard to predict this year but i think arsenal may slide down the table this year. same with aston villa. everton will probably move a couple of places as they don’t have to worry about european football. My top 4 tips are, in no particular order : Chelsea, Man United, Man City, Liverpool

United definitely first! but i don’t think liverpool will be in top 4 this season too! I think city won’t be in too despite all those big signings, they just can’t perform! 1st. United, 2nd Chelsea, 3rd spurs, 4th arsenal.

    Manchester United will win.

Graham, I’m not jumpin on you about this, but we’re too good to finish in anything other than champions, or, failing that, runners-up. We’ve only failed to do that once since the league’s reformating, and we intend to keep it that way. That right there is a point to prove.

I am thinking that the nice Mr Hodgson will be a great transformation for Liverpool and I have put them to win the Premiership with Manchester City 2nd, then Manchester United and Chelsea. But we still have to the 31st August and some more transfers.

I think 1st UNITED 2nd CHELSEA 3rd CITY 4th LIVERPOOL 5th SPURS. Obviously a shocker of a season for Arsenal awaits! Cesc leaving will be a huge loss and if he doesn’t leave his head and heart will not be in it anyway. United lost the league by 1 point was it? They lost away to Fulham when having only Evra out of their first back 4. Also lost twice to Chelsea, those three games were the most important in where the trophy ended up. I’m pretty confident United will improve in those games and regain the PL in Fergusons last season!

United all the way, the young players have matured a bit (obertan, diouf..) and the old and experienced are better than ever (Giggsy, Scholezey) and the dean (Sir Alex) is at it again, I cant tell you how many times he has been in this situation, be sure that last years flop will be this year’s succes… !! 🙂
