Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp could be leading the side to the Premier League title this season.

Liverpool and Manchester City play out an early title-race six-pointer at Anfield on Saturday, in a game that could see the Merseysiders narrow the deficit to leaders Chelsea while boosting their own hopes of domestic success in the process.

The Reds have somewhat kept up the pace with Chelsea this season, and have an outstanding record against the elite clubs which suggests they should be taken seriously ahead of this weekend’s clash. Liverpool did the double over City in the league last season, and are in great shape to repeat the feat on Saturday.

Liverpool unbeaten in games against top-half opposition

Liverpool are favourites to win against Manchester City when the two sides lock horns at Anfield not only due to home advantage but because of their record against sides in the op-10 of the Premier League this season. No longer are the Reds coming off second-best against the elite clubs and are forging a reputation in the process that will give City something to worry about.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have already beaten the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton, while drawing with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. Only Chelsea (21) have picked up more points to top-half opponents in the league this season than Liverpool (18) so they won’t be overawed by the occasion as their mental strength has been highlighted in the big game victories.

Manchester City’s risk-taking and expansive playing style could play into Liverpool’s hands

Under manager Pep Guardiola, Manchester City have adopted a possession-based attacking style of football that sees them play the ball out of the back and throw bodies forward in an attempt to control the game in their opponents’ half. And it means a turnover in possession can see City susceptible to the counter attack, something Leicester City exploited in their 4-2 victory over the Sky Blues earlier this month.

Expect Liverpool to try and force errors from Manchester City trying to play the ball short from goal kicks, and when the Reds are pressed in their own half, their fast movement of the ball could see them beat the first block and have space to create a clear-cut opportunity. As shown by their home and away wins over City last season, Liverpool’s style is perfect to counter that of their fellow title-chasers. Liverpool are 27/20 to win against Manchester City this weekend.

Can the Merseysiders come out on top?
