After just eight minutes on the pitch in Manchester City colours, Sergio Aguero established himself as a fan favourite at Etihad Stadium. The Argentine began his debut with a Javier Hernandez trademarked goal, a tap in at the far post, following a brilliant cross from English right-back Micah Richards. Just three minutes later, the Argentine found himself at the center of attention yet again after he spectacularly kept the ball in play and found David Silva who netted home from close range, putting City up 3-0 on Premier League newcomers Swansea City. Just when Swansea City thought their second half nightmare was over, Aguero scored a cracking goal from some 25 yards out, putting Manchester City at the top of the English Premier League table alongside Bolton Wanderers.
But is one performance really enough to make Aguero City’s number one option at striker? Prior to last season I would have said no, but after last season, I cannot resist jumping on Aguero’s bandwagon following his remarkable debut.
Fernando Torres
We all know the tale of Fernando Torres’ first year at Chelsea, but as a proclaimed United supporter, I cannot resist telling it again. Basically the story starts as follows.
Once upon a time, Fernando Torres made a 50 million pound move from Liverpool to Chelsea. After bagging nine goals in 25 appearances for the Merseysiders, Torres suffered a huge dip in form after his move to West London. In 18 games for the Blues, the former Atletico Madrid hitman managed just a single goal. Albeit, he did have two assists, but no one pays centre-forwards for having more assists than goals.
Edin Džeko
Džeko joined Manchester City last season and though he did not enjoy tremendous success right away, he was far more effective than Torres. Džeko scored six times in all competitions for City in 2010-11 (21 appearances). The Bosnian has gotten off to a hot start this season, netting in each of City’s first two matches. A partnership between Aguero and Dzeko will surely be on Mancini’s radar after their tremendous performances versus Swansea City in just 30 minutes together. Dzeko is keen on a potential partnership with the Argentine international:
“It’s amazing for a new player to come on for the last 30 minutes and score two goals. I am very happy for him, but I am also happy for City in getting a player like him – he can only help us in the future.”
“And he is not even 100% fit yet. In the next games he can only get better and better. He scored twice when not fit, so we can’t wait to see what he is like at 100%.”
“Every good player is welcome to our team as we want to win titles.”
“The beginnings have always been slow for me, and that was the case at City, but this year I feel fit and I feel very good. I feel much better than last season.”
“For every player it is important to be fit and have a good pre-season behind him. This summer I have done everything with the team and that makes you feel better.”
“I want to improve in every game, but I have started the season well. I try to do my best in every game to help the team.”
