Wigan chairman stands by struggling Martinez

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has backed manager Roberto Martinez to be the man to get the club off the bottom of the Premier League table.

The Latics currently sit at the foot of the division with just five points from 10 games, which includes only one win that came at home to QPR back in August.

But Whelan has now come out to back the under-fire manager and has insisted that he would never consider replacing the former Swansea City boss.

“Roberto’s position is never in question. I respect him and I know I’m going to get 110 per cent from Roberto every time the team takes the field. Things are going against us but we have to keep battling on,” Whelan said.

“We’re not fools, we really have to rally round and do what we do best.”

“My spirits are never down. We may be at the foot of the table right now, but we won’t be at the end of the season.”

Wigan’s next clash is a relegation six-pointer against Mick McCarthy’s Wolves at Molineux on Sunday.
