According to BBC Sports, Wigan Athletic has made a revised bid for Middlesbrough’s defensive midfielder Lee Cattermole.
The Latics are believed to have offered around £3.5m for the 20-year old England Under-21 international after failing with an initial approach.
Wigan have been relatively busy in the transfer market recently, signing midfielder Olivier Kapo for £3.5 million from Birmingham City, Egypt striker Amr Zaki on a one-year loan deal from Zamalek and Dutch winger Daniel de Ridder on a free transfer deal.
In light of the fresh bid, Boro manager Gareth Southgate withdrew Cattermole from Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Celtic.
“It’s not a done deal but something could happen in the next 24 hours,” said Southgate.
“We have had a revised offer from Wigan and we felt that he was probably not in the right frame of mind to play against Celtic.†He also added, “It’s not agreed but it’s pretty close to what we are looking forâ€Â
Cattermole is a product of Middlesbrough’s youth academy and has made 69 appearances for the club, scoring three goals. As a teenager he became established in the first-team squad under former manager Steve McClaren but has struggled to stay in the team under predecessor Southgate.
