Goerginio Wijnaldum’s contract with Liverpool expires at the end of the season, but no agreement over a new one has been reached, and according to Sky Sports, the talks on the subject have reached an impasse.
The report also claims that suggestions from elsewhere that the midfielder has turned down the club’s offer and is set to depart in the summer, are wide of the mark. Wijnaldum wants to stay at Anfield, it is still his preferred option for the issue to be resolved, but he wants the wages set in the new deal to reflect his significance to Jurgen Klopp’s team.
The 30-year-old has so far made 158 Premier League appearances since joining the Merseysiders from Newcastle in 2016, starting 142 of them. Only Roberto Firmino has more in that time, and looking at the issue from that side, Wijnaldum seems well within his rights to demand wages suitable for a player of his availability and consistency. The only reason that seems plausible for Liverpool being reluctant to agree to his demands is his age.
Wijnaldum was heavily linked with Barcelona last summer but no offer for his services has come as of yet.
