The rumour heard around the Merseyside at the moment is that £35 million signing Andy Carroll will be sold by the Reds in the upcoming transfer window.
Carroll, who has struggled to find the back of the net as a member of the Reds, has admitted that his hefty price-tag has made it difficult for him to live up to the expectations of Liverpool’s supporters.
The former Newcastle United striker has bagged just five Premier League goals in 37 appearances since moving to the Merseyside last season, a less than ideal goal-scoring ratio to put it nicely.
A whopping 12 English Premier League teams have netted more goals than Liverpool in 2011-12, with the Reds having scored just 37 goals in 32 league matches.
Fulham, Norwich City, Sunderland, West Bromwich Albion and Blackburn Rovers have all scored more goals than Liverpool in the league this season.
In other words, the Reds desperately need to add players with goal-scoring capabilities.
Where does that leave Andy Carroll?
To be perfectly honest, I think Carroll will be sold at a “discount rate” this summer. If the Reds get an offer of £15 million, I believe they should cut their losses and make the sale.
Thus, that leaves Carroll out of the picture as they say.
Now then, here are a few players the Reds should target in the next transfer window.
Clint Dempsey, Fulham
Fulham talisman Clint Dempsey should be one of Liverpool’s top transfer targets in the summer of 2012.
The US international has bagged 16 English Premier League goals in 33 league games in 2011-12, which is twice as many as the Reds’ top scorer Luis Suarez.
Dempsey’s season-long purple patch has led to 22 goals in all competitions, while simultaneously bringing Fulham level on points with Liverpool. Ironic? Definitely.
Nicklas Bendtner, Sunderland (Arsenal)
Yes, your eyes are fine.
Believe it or not, Bendtner has been an integral part of Sunderland’s revival under new boss Martin O’Neill.
Although the Denmark international has managed just seven goals in 25 league appearances, his hold up play has led to five assists and countless created chances.
With Arsenal likely to unload him in the summer, a small fee could yield huge rewards for the Reds.
Stephane Sessegnon, Sunderland
Sessegnon has been a constant danger man for the Black Cats this season.
The former Le Mans starlets has tallied a team-high seven goals and nine assists in 31 league appearances this season, and would surely upgrade Liverpool’s innovation and creativity if the Merseysiders decide to sign him.
What Liverpool need are better players, and Sessegnon certainly fits the bill.
