According to recent reports Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has his sights set on Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola to replace Carlo Ancelotti, if their relationship further deteriorates.
Relations between the Italian and the Blues owner have become strained in the last few weeks.
Control
The Russian has had a bigger say in club affairs of late and it seems that Ancelotti doesn’t appreciate his meddling in team affairs.
Abramovich though has a right to have his say in all things Chelsea with the amount of his own money he has put into the club. However he may just have over stepped the mark with some recent decisions.
He has been undermining the Italian’s authority in recent weeks. He sacked assistant manager Ray Wilkins without Ancelotti’s say in the matter. It seems that Abramovich is trying to unsettle Ancelotti in order to change coach this summer.
Chelsea’s recent poor run of form hasn’t helped Carlo Ancelotti’s position within the club. The Blues have had to cope with a host of first team absentees and that has resulted in Chelsea losing top spot in the Premier League. Ancelotti is suddenly under increasing pressure.
Roman Abramovich is known to love everything about Barcelona. He loves their style of play, their club structure and their traditions. He would like just a pinch of their style of play and he thinks he can get that by hiring their manager.
Doubts
Barca boss Pep Guardiola has refused to commit his long-term future to the club. He signed a contract extension last January but questions were asked why it was such a short contract. Barca are likely to try to get the young coach to extend his contract soon but it seems that he is keeping his options open as his contract expires next summer.
Guardiola is a known admirer of the English Premier League. He has already been touted as a replacement for Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson but Chelsea could beat the Red Devils to signing the highly-rated young coach.
Wanted
Guardiola would be wanted by most of the major clubs in Europe. However there are only a few clubs big enough to even think about approaching the Spaniard and Chelsea are in that small bracket.
When he does leave his beloved Barcelona it will be with a heavy heart as he is a Barca man through and through. I believe he will leave when he feels he has achieved everything he wants to achieve and he feels he needs a new challenge.
Winner
He has already won every trophy he can in club football with Barcelona. At just 39 years of age he must now be thinking what else can I achieve at Barcelona? Maybe he thinks this is the time for a new challenge.
He is known to be uneasy with the goings on behind the scenes at Barca in recent times but if he joined Chelsea he would have to deal with Abramovich’s more active interest. Guardiola is very much his own man and I don’t think he would like to work with a meddling owner.
Guardiola has bigger things to think about in the next few days with Barca facing bitter-rivals Real Madrid on Monday night. The game could be a season defining moment for the Barca boss and his outstanding team.
Likely
Whatever happens for Chelsea this season it seems that Roman Abramovich wants Carlo Ancelotti out of the club. I don’t understand the reasons behind the Russian wanting the 51 year-old out but something has obviously gone on behind the scenes. If Ancelotti does leave the Bridge then Pep Guardiola would be the finest replacement Chelsea could find.
Will Pep Guardiola be the next Chelsea boss?
