Will Chelsea go for a complete rebuild this summer?

michael-ballackSince Chelsea exited the Champions League on Tuesday night to Italian champions Inter rumours of a complete overhaul of their squad have been rife.

Their squad has been stretched in recent months chasing both the Premier League and Champions League crowns and signs of wear and tear showed against the Italians.

Ageing

A lot Chelsea’s squad are in their late-twenties to early-thirties. Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti seems to like his squads to be experienced but there always needs to be the right mixture of young and old. Last summer Chelsea were quite quiet in the transfer market and it could cost them big come May.

The likes of Deco, Michael Ballack, Belletti, Hilario and Ricardo Carvalho are in their thirties and starting to look their age. According to recent reports all five could be leaving Chelsea this summer, despite whether Chelsea wins the Premier League or not.

Other players who could also exit Stamford Bridge are Joe Cole, Paulo Ferreira and Salomon Kalou. If that amount of players were to leave the Bridge it would be regarded as a massive clearout and those players would have to be replaced.

It’s believed that Chelsea’s Russian owner Roman Abramovich is prepared to spend big this summer in an attempt to revitalise the Chelsea squad. He seems to be frustrated with the current squad and hopes to build a new squad this summer.

A lot of names have been bandied around in the press but some are more likely than others. Here is a rundown.

Unlikely

Fernando Torres (Liverpool)

The prolific striker would be an ideal signing for the Blues. He has pace power and skill everything you would want in a striker. He has also voiced his concerns about Liverpool’s current situation in recent days.

However I doubt that Torres will leave Anfield this summer. If he does do the unlikely then a move to European champions Barcelona or Italian champions Inter looks more likely.

Favourite

Sergio ‘Kun’ Aguero (Atletico Madrid)

The little Argentinian has been constantly linked with a big money move to the Blues and this summer that move could materialise. This season he has became frustrated by his side’s poor form in La Liga and may well decide it’s time to move on.

A fee in the region of £45million has been mooted for the talented attacker. Chelsea would face stiff competition from La Liga sides Real Madrid and Barcelona. It remains to be seen which is his preferred option but it seems he is almost certain to move on this summer.

Available

David Villa (Valencia)

There is a feeling in Valencia that Los Ches are resigned to losing their top talent this summer. The club are in serious financial difficulty and the sale of the Spanish international would bring in a large sum of money. Chelsea would have to pay a fee in the region of £30million for his services.

One stumbling block with Villa is that he would prefer to stay in Spain with both Real Madrid and Barcelona looking to sign the striker. Villa would add an extra dimension to a Chelsea attack which current lacks options.

Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich)

Like Villa it’s widely acknowledged that Ribery will leave Bayern this summer. He has been linked with a move away from the Allianz-Arena for the past few summers but this summer it’s finally expected to happen.

Ribery has already stated that Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona are interested in signing him this summer. He would be another good attacking option for the Blues. However it will be down to Ribery where he ends up and he seems to have very good options available to him.

Possible

Benfica winger Angel Di Maria has also been linked with Chelsea but Mega rich Manchester City are also monitoring his situation. The Argentinian international is highly rated and it looks unlikely that Benfica will be able to keep hold of him for much longer.

Napoli playmaker Marek Hamsik is on the radar of many of Europe’s top clubs. The Slovakian’s form in the last few seasons in Serie A has been impressive. His box-to-box style would prove a great asset for the Blues. The current favourites for his signature this summer are Jose Mourinho’s Inter.

Amazing

It’s amazing to think that there is all this debate in the media and Chelsea could still end up with a league and cup double. Yet it seems the man who writes the big cheques is not happy at failing to win the Champions League for another season and is ready to spend big to challenge for the trophy next season.

We would like to know who you’d like to see in a Chelsea shirt next season?

he WAS an Evertonian, David. sorry, man, but you cant be a Toffee unless you play/support the toffees. . . btw, why are yall called the Toffees?

well, it dont matter to me who Donovan plays for, as long as he never scores against Manchester United.

balotelli definitely does have the strength+ability to be a PL player. the first time I saw him last season, I thought I was watching a video about what would happen if a Terminator (. . . okay. . . ) played football instead of hunting John Connor down, as he was knocking defenders back/down, and taking hits like they were nothing at times.

It dates back to the early years of the club, when there was a toffee shop right by the ground. To this day on matchday theres a girl who goes round the side of the pitch throwing out Toffee’s.

I can see Donovan coming back to Goodison Park very soon. Check out the Everton website for confirmation that he said he is now an Evertonian!

Brad,Landon said he would only move to Everton if he came back to the Premier League, as he is now an Evertonian!.

I think a move to the Premier League would suit Mario Balotelli perfectly. He has the physical strength to cope with the game and has the ability. I suppose it all depends what happens with Jose Mourinho at Inter this summer

dang guys, yall left me for dead!!!

Drogba, Lampard, and Terry. . . what can I say? They HAVE to stay at CFC. . . they’ve been the main reasons that the Blues arent feeling blue- down in the championship that is. maybe they should bring in some guys. . . yall already said Aguero (uhh, say what, though?) and Balotelli, they would be good choices (but Aguero is Messi’s twin, not going to England to play for a team there. Ashley Cole; is he recovered from Donovan’s tackle yet? He is still an asset.

I know there are other players who help; Cech for one, but he’s still looking a little shaken after being ejected from that match against Wigan a few months ago.

maybe yall could bring in Donovan? Hmm? haha, I dont know if MLS (seeing as the Galaxy only have a few rights to his signature, I dont know if you could get him to do anything more than be a short term loan.

if it gets to being a desperate situation, CFC might try to buy Beckham. He may not be the player he used to be, but the genius is still there. . . he made a lot of fine passes during the MLS Playoffs last season.

Ali, those are very good picks. I have watched Manuel Neuer in the Bundesliga for Schalke and hes one of the most solid up and coming keepers in the world.

I don’t think Rodwell will leave Everton just yet. The other two are two very promising defenders.

For Chelsea FC Fan Yoann Gourcuff is the driving force behind Bordeaux’s recent rise to power in France. Hes a French international, who is likely to be at the World Cup with Les Bleus.

Jose Baxter is a promising young forward at Everton. However I think a move to Chelsea would prove too soon, as Chelsea need players who are ready to play for the first team now.

@Ali…those are great ideas…Balotelli would be ideal…I know I said Aguero would be my top choice, but I overlooked Balotelli…Balotelli would be my #1 choice…Aguero #2…I think Balotelli would do well in the EPL and Chelsea have the right men to keep him in line…Rodwell and Shawcross would be niiiiiiice additions to the back-line but Fergie has his eyes on them too and i’m not sure Chelsea can attract them…Pjanic in mid (good call!)..not sure who Gourcuff, Sidney or Baxter are tho but i’m curious…

@Dave…I think this CL exit solidifies Chelsea as a stagnant team…if they had advanced we’d be singing a different song, but the loss has put them under a microscope now…not that i’m whining – you have to start questioning at some point whether the group you have can go all the way or not when they’ve had this much trouble advancing through…

I hate to say it CFC but I think Chelsea are starting to resemble the AC Milan side of the latter Carlo Ancelotti years. If they are not careful and sign some new blood they could stagnate like the Rossoneri.

I really do not think that Aguero is capable of playing in the EPL. We have long argued that Messi will not set a foot on English soil, well here is a similar case…

Aguero just doesnt have the phyisicl tenasity and strenght that EPL strikers especially need to be able to go against some of the world’s finest middies and deffenders. You need someone strong someone like Dorgba, Anelka, Rooney, Defoe…. Maybe Balotelli? Villa? even Torres would be great because I think his and CR9’s playing styles are almost identical (with less ego of course)….

Well, it’s tough crap for the Managers to sort out…

@Steveo…yea Bosi and Cole would have made a significant difference in the back-line…but it is what it is…Inter won fairly…Obi i’d like to see stay…Ballack I can live without, but he’s been so loyal and plays with the fire you want to see, that you just want to have him there to set an example…

I don’t know fans…it was bad to see Terry slip…then it was even worse to see Barca win…but this is the worst yet…

    I think I need a break from Football…

@Dave…I think the appeal is in the style of play…there is so much more flair with the Gunners and United…they also have brilliant managers and they are a much younger group…as for Manchester United, the name and history speaks for itself…but mainly, I think, it’s the style of play and the history of these clubs that attract better talent. In recent years, Chelsea have become more entertaining to watch, but they are getting older and older so they will not be entertaining without fresh talent which is becoming more and more scarce…

I’m not expecting Roman to sign a $100million player either…i’d settle for a bunch of nobodies that are looking to play their lives out for the club and have them work with Drogba, Lampard and Terry to carry on the club…

I think that Ballack needs to go, along with Mikel. Each seem to effect the midfield less and less with every match, unless you count the ammount of back passes…

In my opinion, Chelsea need an additional midfield playmaker, and need Bosingwa and A Cole healthy again so we can return to the ‘diamond’ formation – seemed to work pretty good at the start of the EPL season.

for the sake of english football, they need to rebuild. . . CFC has suddenly fallen down a bit. . . UEFA CL against inter, no longer league leaders at home (sorry, but not complaining there, and yall should know why)

I have to agree with you on Aguero CFC. He is a top player and I think he will probably stay in Spain. What I want to know is why don’t Chelsea have the same appeal as Manchester United or the other sides you have mentioned?

I don’t think Abramovich will sack Ancelotti. Surely hes clever enough to know that the club now needs stability?

  • Chelsea FC Fan

Aguero would be my top choice, but no big names want to come to Chelsea, or would be loyal to Chelsea, like the stars they have now…and i’d rather not put up with that crap personally…it was good to know that the current players were very committed and loyal to the club.

With that in mind, i’d say to look at the youth…we need players looking to make a name – not players that already have a name…

We need to win the EPL with a new group before reaching for the Champions League again…that will not be easy for a long time with the way Wenger and the Master Fergie have their teams running now…but i’ll take a loss knowing my team is loyal rather than hoping they stick around for the next game b/c of a bad day…

Roman needs to realize that stability in the management is needed too…we can’t get rid of Ancelotti at all in the near future…

I don’t want Torres or Ribery b/c they get injured so frequently that you don’t see them anyway…Torres maybe b/c Nico and DD are deadly together and having Torres as back-up is just icing on the cake…but he’s not reliable back-up either…

David Villa would be nice, but Chelsea do not attract these players the way Arsenal or Manchester (or even Barca and Madrid) can…

Out of all the players you’ve mentioned in your article, I hope Ballack and Kalou stay…the rest should move on…Joe Cole, as much as I would like to see him stay, needs to go to Man U – Fergie will make him super again…

I have trust in Roman, so whatever he decides I should be happy with, but bringing in injury prone and ageing athletes is not something I want to see…
