SPL giants Glasgow Rangers now have a new owner in the shape of 39 year-old Scottish businessman Craig Whyte.
Whyte’s newly-formed company Wavetower Limited are believed to have paid £52.5million for David Murray’s 85.3 majority share of the club.
Force
Rangers new owner has promised to bring the glory days back to Ibrox.
He released a statement saying: “ After six months of negotiations, I am delighted to confirm that agreement has been reached between myself and Sir David Murray and that Wavetower now holds the controlling interest in Rangers.
“As a keen Rangers supporter I now look forward to helping the club secure its future as a leading force in Scottish and European football.
“I know the club has gone through some difficult spells in recent times, but it is my commitment to the manager, his backroom team, the players and, most importantly, the loyal supporters that I will do all I can to ensure further success in the weeks, months and years to come.
“Rangers is a great club with a great future. It has the best supporters in the world and I will do everything possible to protect and enhance the club’s standing going forward.”
Ambitious
From that statement it seems that Whyte has big plans for his club. I just wonder how much money he will be prepared to invest in the Gers. He must realise the challenge that’s lays ahead of him.
The club have struggled with finances in recent years. These struggles have meant that the quality of player at the club has declined. The Gers could still end up as SPL champions but that’s only because the rest of the SPL are also struggling against financial hardship.
History
Glasgow Rangers has a tremendous history. The Gers have won 53 Scottish league titles and won the domestic cup 33 times. And their rivalry with their bitter city rivals Celtic is one of the most fiercest in European football.
Europe
For a long time Rangers were considered a force in European football. In recent times though the club has struggled to make an impact on European competition.
However in 2008 the Gers got to the final of the old UEFA Cup, only to be beaten 2-0 by Russian side Zenit St Petersburg.
For the club to be a force in Europe again Whyte and his consortium will have to invest a lot of money strengthening the squad.
Era
Legendary Rangers boss Walter Smith will bow out as boss at the end of this season. He will be replaced by another Rangers hero Ally McCoist in the dugout. He is currently Walter Smith’s assistant. Smith leave on a high note with is 10th SPL title.
Next season will be like a new era for Rangers. A new manager, a new chairman and judging by what Whyte is saying a host of new players. I’m sure this takeover will be well received by the Rangers fans.
For a few years now the club have seemed to be chugging a long not really progressing. And the club has so much potential. Rangers is a massive club and hopefully Whyte and his consortium can move the club forward.
Will the Rangers takeover help the club become a force in Europe?
