Dundee United striker David Goodwillie has won the SPL Young Player of the Year award.
He also picked up the most promising youngster in the division award handed out by the PFA. The youngster deserves the awards for starting to fulfil his major potential.
Promising
David Goodwillie is probably one of the most promising Scottish players of his generation.
At 22 he has already made over 120 appearances for the terrors in his brief career. This season he has scored 16 goals for the Dundee club.
He made his international debut against the Faroe Islands last November and that cap is likely to be added to in the near future. Goodwillie is the sort of young up and coming player Scotland are in need of to revive their fortunes.
For too long the Tartan Army have been in the international shadows and it’s young players like Goodwillie who can provide a brighter future for Scotland‘s national side.
Proud
The Scottish youngster revealed his pride at winning the two awards by telling Sky Sports:
“It makes me proud, and my mum and dad. I have come from nothing to be that and I couldn’t have imagined that when I was younger. I think I’ve had a good season. There have been ups and downs but I’ve ended it on a high.”
Move
His goals and rise to prominence in the Dundee United’s team has led to him being linked with a move away from Tannadice. Just like every young player performing well in the SPL he has caught the eye of Scottish giants Rangers and Celtic.
It must be the ultimate compliment for any young Scottish player to be linked with the two biggest clubs in the SPL. The Terrors won’t want to lose their star player but according to reports any club that bids £2million will sign the youngster.
It will be a massive loss for the club who are currently fourth in the SPL table. Goodwillie has played a big part in the clubs good performance in this seasons SPL. Like most SPL clubs though they are not in the best of financial shape.
Even the traditional giants of Scottish football Rangers and Celtic are currently struggling with their own financial problems. And according to reports the Glasgow giants would struggle to pay the £2million fee for the youngster.
Future
David Goodwillie looks to have a bright future in the game and it seems that Dundee United will find it hard to keep hold of the 22 year-old much longer. In fact I can see an English club coming in this summer and signing the youngster.
He has a natural instinct for finding the net and that knack would be ideal for English football, if not yet in the Premier League then in the Championship at least. However he has the potential to become a good Premier League player.
Will David Goodwillie leave Tannadice this summer?
