Will Edin Dzeko justify his big price tag next season?

Bosnian international striker Edin Dzeko arrived at Manchester City for £27million and with a big reputation.

He had scored over 80 goals in the German Bundesliga in 150 games. He had also helped his club Wolfsburg to the Bundesliga title.

Talk

However after arriving at City in the January transfer window Dzeko scored just six times for his new club and has admitted that all the talk about his price tag have affected him.

The striker told the Daily Mirror: “ I was sick of all the talk about the transfer. It had got to my head a little bit [by the time he arrived at City].

“ But still I think I had some good games and scored some important goals. I was new in the team and it was a hard season. It’s always difficult to come to a new club midway through a hard season like that, but I know what I have done in the last six months. Now it’s my second season and I want to do better”.

Goals

It was always going to be difficult scoring the same number of goals in the Premier League as in the Bundesliga. The English top flight is a slightly tougher league to play in than the German league.

His record in the Bundesliga was still really impressive and lead to him to be linked with a number of top European clubs before joining City. A lot of the other clubs were put off by Dzeko’s price tag but mega-rich City didn’t even flinch in paying the big price tag.

Potential

Dzeko does have the potential to be one of the best strikers in Europe. His style is that of an old fashioned target man, who scores a lot of goals with his head. He isn’t poor on the ground but lacks a slight turn of pace.

At 25 years of age he still has time to improve and I’m sure he will become a better player at Manchester City over the next years. He is certainly in his prime years for a striker and will only get better.

Competition

Next season Dzeko could have some big competition for a place in the Manchester City team though. Last season Manchester City played with a lone striker and next season will probably play the same formation in the majority of their games.

City boss Roberto Mancini already has Mario Balotelli available to him next season. And if reports are to be believed the Italian could also have Argentinian striker Sergio Aguero in his squad for the new season.

Unhappy striker Carlos Tevez still hasn’t moved on, so he could also be competing for that lone striker role. Dzeko will have to improve his performances from last season if he is to play regular first team football next season.

However Dzeko brings a different dimension to the side than any of his teammates. Mancini brought him in to add physical presence to the City forward line and he definitely does that. He just needs to rediscover his prolific scoring form from his Bundesliga days.

Scorer

Dzeko is capable of scoring goals at any level and if given the chances will prove it next season. He is now settled at City and has had time to get accustomed to his new teammates.

Dzeko’s return of goals in the new season will be far better than last season and on his day he is the prolific striker that every club in the Premier League would love to have in their squad. I have no doubts that Edin Dzeko will prove to be a success in the Premier League.

Will Edin Dzeko start to justify his transfer fee next season?

I read this morning that Aguero was on his way to City today to pick up his signing bonus…if that is the case, Dzeko is going to have a harder time justifying his price-tag…not that he cares – it’s really Sheikh Mansour that needs to justify it…
