Will Nikola Zigic be playing in the Premier League next season?

Nikola Zigic’s agent is claiming that the Serbian international is attracting interest from the likes of Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

Milan Calasan has also stated that other top flight English clubs are interest in the beanpole striker.

Claim

Calasan told Serbian newspaper Blic: “ A few English teams are showing interest in Zigic, but the obstacle now is his high wage at Birmingham,”

“There has been interest from Everton, Wigan and Sunderland, but they cannot meet the quoted price.
“Zigic certainly won’t be playing in the Championship. There are clubs in England which are willing to meet the demands for him, and it is possible he will be continuing his career in the Premier League.”

He went on to state: “Roberto Mancini admires Zigic and would love to see him at Manchester City. If Adebayor departs this summer, the transfer could happen. As for Redknapp, he is also heaping praise on Zigic, but he already has Crouch among his ranks.”

Farfetched

The idea of Manchester City with all their wealth being interested in signing the striker is farcical. City have just spent £40million on Argentinian striker Sergio Aguero and I don’t think Zigic is even on the same planet as Aguero, talent wise that is.

In fact even if City sold Emmanuel Adebayor they just seem like the most unlikely destination for the Serbian striker this summer.

Decent

Nikola Zigic is a decent player but didn’t exactly cover himself in glory for Birmingham last season as they were relegated to the Championship. Granted he did score the opening goal in the Blues Carling Cup final victory over Arsenal but he was poor for the rest of the season.

He scored just five goals in 25 appearances for Birmingham in the Premier League last season. Not exactly a great goal return for a striker who had scored 13 goals in just 19 games for Racing Santander in La Liga the season before.

Tall

At nearly 6ft 8 he is one of the tallest footballers in the world. You would imagine him to be fantastic in the air but from what I have seen of the striker he is poor in the air. He lets smaller defenders dominate him and that negates the fact that he has such a height advantage.

Options

The 30 year-old apparently has options in other countries and it’s probably best for his career if he moves to a another league. There is reported interest from Nurnberg and Hannover from the German Bundesliga.

He might just have to accept that his career in the English top flight is over and move on. Maybe he should think that his year in English football hasn’t been a complete waste of time after he collected a Carling Cup winners medal.

Interest

It seems that Calasan is desperate to drum up interest in the striker, as Zigic doesn’t want to be playing in the second tier of English football next season. The problem for Zigic is that it was his lack of goals last season that has put Birmingham into the Championship in the first place.

I believe he should be made to stay and try and help the club back into the Premier League, instead of taking the easy option of leaving just because his side are suddenly in the Championship. Far too many players do that, run away from their clubs after they have helped to get them relegated.

Move

It seems a certainty that Nikola Zigic will leave Birmingham this summer. I don’t think the Blues fans will be too bothered that the striker is leaving and I really doubt that he will be playing Champions League football next season.

He wasn’t good enough for the Premier League, so why should any top team even consider signing him. I don’t think they will and Zigic will end up at a second rate club collecting undeservedly high wages.

While Birmingham fans will hopefully be watching a striker who doesn’t struggle to hit a cows backside with a banjo next season.

Where will Nikola Zigic end up this summer?

I agree with you Sam, Nikola Zigic is overrated and I ithink that he should now leave English football.

one of the most overrated players ever. it’s just because of his height. he clearly doesn’t have what it takes in the premier league as a first choice striker and at 30 years of age he isn’t likely to get any better. He should either stay with birmingham or move abroad
