Manchester City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips has become a victim of his clubs riches.
The 29 year-old is currently out of favour with City boss Roberto Mancini and has now admitted he might need to consider a loan move in January.
Loan
The former-Chelsea star has stated that he wants to end his career at Eastlands but would consider a temporary move in the winter transfer window.
He told Sky Sports News: “Well I’m never going to be able to say how frustrated I am, some people might never understand but obviously I know it is part of the game I’m working hard in training and I just have to keep going.
Asked if he would consider moving on in January he continued: “Yes possibly, it could be if I’m not playing here obviously I would like to play football – it’s the reason why I became who I am because I just enjoy the game so possibly yes.”
Regular
At 29 years-old he is at the point of career were he needs to be playing regular first team football. When he was at Chelsea he suffered long periods of warming the bench and that situation lead to him returning to City.
Unfortunately he is now in the same situation. He has made just three Premier League appearances this season and he’s obviously not getting the amount of time on the pitch he would like.
Potential
When he first broke into the Manchester City team as a youngster he was highly rated. He was being lauded as a player who would be a mainstay for club and country. He hasn’t quite lived up to all the hype surrounding him.
He has talent but for various reasons he just hasn’t hit the heights expected of him. Maybe if he would have been playing regular first team football throughout his career he would of had a slightly better career.
Maybe he has had a lot to live up to because he is the son of Arsenal legend Ian Wright or maybe the media hampered his development by hyping him up so much as a youngster, as we tend to do with talented young Englishmen.
England
To date the tiny winger has won 36 caps for England but has flattered too deceive on far too many occasions in the Three Lions shirt. He has lightning pace but when in good positions fails to deliver the goods.
He now cannot get into the England squad with the likes of James Milner, Ashley Young and Theo Walcott ahead of him in the pecking order for a right-wing berth. His international career isn’t over but he has a long way back to claiming a place in Fabio Capello’s squad.
Ideal
Manchester City has almost limitless resources and will no doubt strengthen their squad again in January. That could mean Wright-Phillips could be even further down the pecking order at Eastlands. Maybe a temporary move would suit everybody involved.
Liverpool has been linked with making a move for winger but it seems unlikely that the winger will be making the move to Anfield on-loan. He has also been linked with a move to the North-East with Newcastle. If he does make a move I’m sure he will get more regular first team wherever he ends up.
Will Shaun Wright-Phillips make a temporary switch in January?
