Arsenal suffered their second defeat in a week as they exited the FA Cup 2-0 at Sunderland yesterday. In truth Arsene Wenger’s side were just woeful.
They lacked quality, heart and guile and it was another poor display from the North London side.
Speculation
Arsenal have underperformed this season and that has lead to speculation over the future of long-serving boss Arsene Wenger. Wenger has done so much for English football since his arrival 16 years ago but his future is now looking unsure.
It seems that the veteran Frenchman is starting to lose heart at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners have struggled in the last few years and seven years without a trophy is unacceptable for a club like Arsenal.
Leaving
Wenger is a legendary figure at Arsenal and will probably not be sacked. I think rather than being sacked he will decide to move on or even upstairs at the end of the season. The Arsenal hierarchy knows how much Wenger has done for the club and they don’t want to be the ones who sack him.
Crisis
Arsenal is currently in the midst of a crisis the sort of which hasn’t been seen at Arsenal since Wenger’s arrival at the club. The last few years the Arsenal team has decreased in quality and that has lead to poor performances from the team.
Development
Arsene Wenger has tried to bring through youngsters into the first team and they are simply not good enough for Arsenal. Wenger has a history of bringing in youngsters and turning them into world-class players.
However very few of the young players brought to the club in recent years are good enough to make Arsenal into the force they used to be. Wenger has kept blind faith in his young players but it turns out that faith has been misplaced.
Wenger is stubborn and doesn’t want to change his ways. He believes that the club should develop their own players and not spend major money on players. Whether he has a major amount of money to spend is a different matter.
Behind
Arsenal have fallen behind the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City in recent years. Striker Robin Van Persie has carried the team this season, without his goals Arsenal would have been struggling in midtable.
Reports in today’s press suggest that the Dutchman may leave the club this summer. Van Persie’s contract expires in just over a year and it seems with the club in such a poor position he isn’t prepared to sign a contract extension.
Van Persie is regarded as the last world-class player that Arsenal have and him leaving would be an absolute disaster for the club.
Change
I’m a big fan of Arsene Wenger but I think Arsenal now need a change for the club to move forward. It would be nice to see Arsenal recover under Wenger but it looks unlikely to happen. He is too stubborn and set in his ways.
He is loyal to his players, which means he won’t have a clearout. Arsenal’s squad needs major rebuilding and it doesn’t look like Wenger will be the one to do that. There are too many players in the Arsenal squad that are not good enough to wear the Arsenal shirt but Wenger persists with them.
Maybe Wenger would be better off moving upstairs and becoming a director of football. That would mean he would still have a say in the club but that would allow someone with fresh ideas to come in and build a team capable of challenging at the top of the Premier League.
Whatever happens this summer one thing is for sure Arsenal can’t continue the way they are. If they do who knows where the club will be in a years time. Arsene your time is up.
