Willian is still adamant that any new deal he would consider signing would have to be for three years, according to The Athletic.
The old contract binding the Brazilian to Chelsea would have expired at the end of last month but for a one-month extension which enables him to complete the 2019/20 Premier League campaign at Stamford Bridge. Talks of a new deal have been going on for quite some time, and the duration has always been the sticking point over which no agreement could be found. Chelsea simply refuse to guarantee players over 30 a long-term employment, while Willian, soon to turn 32, needs to feel that his services would be needed for a significant period of time before he recommits.
Chelsea have already secured deals to bring in Timo Werner from RB Leipzig and Hakim Ziyech from Ajax, and along with the likes of Tammy Abraham reportedly being set for a new contract and the recent hot form of Christian Pulisic, the need for Willian’s contribution could soon be a thing of the past. They’re also being heavily linked with Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz these days.
