Borussia Dortmund used both of their wing-backs to push their winning streak in the Bundesliga to six games. Goals from Raphael Guerreiro and Achraf Hakimi at either side of half-time allowed Lucien Favre’s men to win at Wolksvagen Arena by a comfortable 2-0 score.
The win puts Dortmund one point behind Bayern Munich in the title race, although Die Roten play later Saturday against Eintracht Frankfurt. Meanwhile, Wolfsburg could lose the sixth place of the standings if other results go against them.
Dortmund quickly grabbed control of the ball in the early going and quickly established dominance with a rate of possession close to 70 percent during the first 20 minutes of the contest. They would have to wait a bit longer to net the opening goal, though, and it came thanks to one of the hottest players in the league in Guerreiro.
The Portugal international tapped the ball home into the empty net following a pass from Thorgan Hazard, who once again got the starting nod over Jadon Sancho. It was Guerreiro’s third goal of the season since it resumed last week. He netted a double against Schalke the last time out.
The first half ended with a 1-0 lead for Dortmund, but Wolfsburg had an excellent chance to even things up shortly after play resumed. Renato Steffen came inches away from equalizing the score, but his shot from inside the box smashed the crossbar when Roman Burki was all but beaten. It was Wolfsburg’s best chance to score throughout the game.
Steffen turned out to be the hosts’ most dangerous player. He had another chance to score in the 62nd minute, but Burki came up huge to deny him. Shortly after, Favre decided to send Sancho into the pitch. The Englishman wouldn’t waste time to make a huge impact in the contest.
The former Manchester City prospect set up Dortmund’s second goal with an excellent pass to Hakimi. The Morocco international composed himself and placed his shot past Koen Casteels into the bottom left corner.
Things would get even more complicated for Wolfsburg when Felix Klaus was sent off due to a harsh challenge that required assistance from the VAR. With 10 men and two goals behind, Wolfsburg didn’t even try to mount a comeback. Dortmund secured the win with absolute ease despite playing away from home.
Dortmund will face a pivotal match in the title race next week as they will take on Bayern Munich. On the other hand, Wolfsburg will travel to take on Bayer Leverkusen. Both matches are scheduled for Tuesday.
