German Bundesliga side VFL Wolfsburg have announced that they have hired former midfielder Pierre Littbarski as Steve McClaren’s number two at the Volkswagen Arena. Littbarski, who was part of the West German squad at three different World Cups between 1981 and 1990, returns to his native land after a gap of eight years.
In Germany, Littbarski was last seen coaching Duisburg. After leaving Duisburg, he moved to Japan, where he coached Yokohama FC. A successful stint at Sydney FC followed, where Littbarski guided the club to the inaugural A-League Championship. In 2006, Littbarski returned to Japan with Avispa, but left them two years later for a short spell with Saipa FC. In November 2008, he was appointed manager of Swiss club Vaduz.
Littbarski was also considered by the media as an outside contender for the Plymouth Argyle and Notts County managerial posts until his appointment by Wolfsburg.
