Steve McClaren has been relieved of his duties as Wolfsburg coach, following the Wolves’ defeat at Hannover.
Wolfsburg slipped to 12th after losing to Hannover, prompting club management to sack coach Steve McClaren and hand over the reigns to assistant coach Pierre Littbarski.
“Dieter called me and told me that I was no longer (Wolfsburg) coach,” McClaren told Bild.
The Englishman took over the team last summer and despite heavy investment in the playing squad, he utterly failed to meet the high expectations this season.
The Hannover defeat was the last drop for the club management, especially after the incident involving midfielder Diego.
Wolfsburg were awarded a penalty late into the game but even though McClaren had told Patrick Helmes to take the spot kick, Brazilian Diego took the penalty and hit the crossbar, and was later fined €100,000 for the incident.
