Wolves´ fight thrills McCarthy

Mick McCarthy lauded his Wolverhampton Wanderers side after their sterling 3-2 victory over Sunderland on Saturday.

Wolves had their substitutes to thank for the win at Molineux, with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake the hero, firing the winner late on to end his side’s run of four successive defeats.

In a thrilling contest, all five goals came in the second half with Kevin Foley firing the opener home on 50 minutes.

But Steve Bruce’s side fought back as goals to Darren Bent and Danny Welbeck put Sunderland on track to secure the points.

But strikes from substitutes Stephen Hunt and Ebanks-Blake gave the hosts an unlikely victory, with McCarthy delighted to secure maximum points.

“I think we earned it, I’m really proud of them and the players deserve all the credit,” McCarthy told Sky Sports.

The 51-year-old saved special praise for George Elokobi, who had to slot into the centre of the Wolves backline to fill the void left by injuries to key defenders.

McCarthy praised the Cameroon full-back’s impressive display, saying: “He’s a good defender and I thought he had an outstanding game playing against good players as well.”

“They had Welbeck and Bent starting then Gyan came on and I thought he had a great game.”
