Apparently Superman wears his pyjamas and he is set to star in the sequel to ‘300’ entitled ‘1’ because he’s just that tough.
I’m not talking about Sergio Ramos, Maicon or Dani Alves I’m talking about Everton captain Phil Neville, joking apart though the veteran defender has received a lot of attention this week.
Sensation
The former-Manchester United star became an internet sensation on Twitter on Tuesday night.
It all started when somebody mentioned the fact that Tottenham winger Gareth Bale destroyed Inter’s Brazilian right-back Maicon in the Champions League but he had a hard time up against the Everton star a few weeks earlier.
Neville then became the most talked about person on the social networking website and some of the quotes that Everton fans left on the site were just priceless. Here are a few of the best ones:
‘The Queen sings God Save Phil Neville.’
‘Death once had a near Phil Neville experience.’
‘Phil Neville doesn’t mow his lawn; he dares his grass to grow.’
‘Phil Neville & Superman had a fight; the loser had to wear their pants over their trousers.’
Even former-teammate USA international Landon Donovan got in on the act saying: ‘Phil Neville is trending?!? What has this world come to?!?!?!?’
Not being a big social networker I had to look up the term trending but apparently it means someone or something being very popular on Twitter and Neville was a very bizarre person to be ‘trending’. He was bizarrely even more popular than American president Barrack Obama on the trendy website.
Publicity
The Everton star shy’s away from publicity and apparently hates it when he receives praise in the public. However even the modest Neville must have had a little chuckle at the fact that people who don’t even like football were looking him up on Tuesday night!
Professional
I have to admit I have not always given Neville the praise he deserves. In fact like a lot of Evertonians I have criticised him in the past. However he is a fantastic professional and if ever there was a good role model for youngsters then Neville is it.
He has made 600 appearances in his professional football career and that’s quite some achievement these days. He’s been in the game for 16 years and has given everything he has for both United and the Blues. His leadership has become vital to Everton team.
When he finishes his playing career he is likely to go into coaching. He has all the ideal attributes to become a top coach or eventually manager.
He is not the most technically gifted player in the Everton team but his experience is vital in a team that sometimes lacks leadership. An Everton team without Phil Neville just hasn’t got the same heart. He is like the heart and soul of the Everton team.
Coach
When he finishes his playing career he is likely to go into coaching. He has all the ideal attributes to become a top coach or eventually manager. I can see him sitting in a Premier League dugout in years to come.
England
His recent form has urged people to call for him to receive a re-call to the England squad. At 33 years-old he is a bit old to be making an international comeback. Then again Fabio Capello called-up 33 year-old Bolton striker Kevin Davies for his last squad, so Neville still has a hope.
I’m not so sure an England call-up would benefit the veteran at this stage of his career but he would certainly do a solid job for the team. He wouldn’t let anybody down and I’d say he is better defensively than current England first choice right-back Glen Johnson.
Knowing Phil Neville I wouldn’t back against a recall to the Three Lions squad and it would be well deserved recognition for a player who has been a fantastic ambassador for the game. However If he does receive a call-up I’m sure he will leave his cape in the house!
Should super Phil Neville be recalled to the England national side?
