Would a move to Everton be a good one for Michael Owen?

Michael Owen is without doubt one of the best finishers English football has ever produced.

At 31 his career seems to be dwindling away instead of ending on a high note.

He did make an impact in the Carling Cup for United in midweek but he’s very much a backup player at Old Trafford.

Backup

Michael Owen is one of six strikers at Manchester United that wants to play first team football. He is currently behind Javier Hernandez, Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and Danny Welbeck in the pecking order. Owen only got on the pitch at Stoke because of Hernandez’s injury.

Had Danny Welbeck been fully fit Michael Owen wouldn’t have even been on the pitch and if all the strikers are fit could struggle to even make the bench.

Waste

Michael Owen still has a lot to give when fit, which he currently is. Owen sitting on the Manchester United bench is a real waste. Michael Owen could still play week-in week-out at most other Premier League teams. Is he really happy sitting on the United bench and only playing occasionally?

Rumours

Rumours have been rife on Merseyside and in the press that Michael Owen could be on his way to Everton in January. Owen is currently on relatively low wages at Old Trafford and is a striker. Its not surprising that Everton are being linked with him.

Striker-less

Everton have been crying out for a decent striker for years. Everton currently have a very solid defence and a good midfield. However Toffee’s boss David Moyes has had to rely on midfielder Tim Cahill as a makeshift striker this season.

There is only so long Everton can play without a recognised striker, we are not Barcelona. Signing Michael Owen could be the answer to Everton’s problems.

Traitor

He wouldn’t have to worry about being a traitor because he is already seen as a traitor by Liverpool fans after joining Manchester United. I watched Manchester United’s game at Stoke with a friend of mine who is a Liverpool fan and every time Owen touched the ball my friend shouted TRAITOR!.

A move to Everton couldn’t harm his relationship with Liverpool fans. There is no longer many Liverpool fans who have much love for the striker.

England

There has been talk about him being recalled for England. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has even stated that he believes Owen can get back in the England squad. I don’t know how you can expect him to get in the England squad when his chances in the United first team will be so limited.

Chance

With Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez currently carrying knocks Owen may get a few more chances in the next few weeks. However once Rooney and Hernandez return to full fitness Owen will be relegated from the starting eleven.

Attitude

Michael Owen of course wants to play football but whether he will leave Manchester United for regular first team football is another matter. I don’t know what Michael Owen’s attitude is towards the dying embers of his career but surely he would enjoy a few more years of plying regular football at a decent size football club?

Unlikely

Although I think that Michael Owen would be a great signing for Everton I believe that Michael Owen will probably sit on the United bench for the foreseeable future. It’s up to Michael Owen what he does with his career and if he is happy being a bit-part player good luck to him.

However this Everton fan would welcome Michael Owen with open arms. He still has a fantastic football brain and could to be one of the signings of the season.

Would Michael Owen be a good signing for Everton?

It’s more like after all WE did for him. If he hadn’t been trained BY liverpool and played FOR liverpool he’d be a no-name striker somewhere else. After he left noticed what happened to his career…
