Would move to Chelsea come too soon for Brazilian wonderkid?

If recent newspaper reports are to be believed Brazil’s latest wonderkid Neymar could be set to join Premier League Chelsea before the transfer window shuts on 1st September.

The mooted fee of £25million is a lot for one player, especially one of just 18 years old.

Hype

The youngster has been receiving rave reviews in Brazil for his performances with Santos, alongside fellow highly-rated youngster Paulo Henrique ‘Ganso’. He also just missed out on this summer’s World Cup with his national side.

However new Brazilian manager Mano Menezes selected the youngster in his first squad and his faith was rewarded as the 18 year-old scored in a 2-0 victory over the USA. He obviously has talent and tremendous potential but you never know how a young player will react to such a big move.

Lightweight

Some pundits are concerned that Neymar may be slightly lightweight for the Premier League, standing just 5ft 8 and weighing just less than nine stone. This proved a problem for Neymar’s compatriot Robinho at Manchester City, along with his attitude and he was loaned to Santos.

I’m sure with rumours rife that he is set for a big money move to the English top flight that the youngster consulted the City striker. If he didn’t then he missed an opportunity to hear what it is like for a Brazilian with undoubted talent to flop in the Premier League. Robinho’s time in England should be a cautionary tale for every Brazilian hoping to move to the Premier League.

Consistency

A lot of Brazilians don’t realise the level of consistency they need in the top European leagues. They seem to think that an occasion piece of skill or touch of flair will get them by. It now takes a lot more than just talent to succeed in the top European leagues.

First Team

Chelsea has a squad full of international footballers where would Neymar fit-in? Would he really want to be sitting on the substitute bench? May be he would be loaned out to another club but I get the feeling Chelsea wouldn’t pay such a big fee for a player they would just loan out.

Benefit

I believe a compromise could be for Chelsea to agree to sign Neymar and then let him stay at Santos for another season. Then he will play first team football and know that he could get his big opportunity next season.

Sitting on the bench will not help his development and if he wants to become the best player in the world then staying at Santos would be a far better move. At Chelsea he would get limited first team action but would get the opportunity to train with world class players such as Didier Drogba.

Compatriots

At 18 years-old Neymar would also need help settling into the club but the presence of compatriots Alex and Ramires would surely help the youngster. He could get homesick and Alex would be able to help him communicate with his new teammates.

Manager

Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti is renowned for bringing the best out of youngsters, the biggest example being his handling of Brazilian superstar Kaka at AC Milan. He brought him over to Italy from Sao Paulo at a tender age and turned him into one of the world’s best players. I’m sure Ancelotti would be a good mentor for the youngster.

Promise

Neymar is rated as one of the brightest young talents in world football and the next few months and years could determine just how good a player he will be in the future. I just hope that all his promise and talent isn’t wasted and he becomes the world superstar that he wishes to be.

Should Neymar make the move to Chelsea?

Sometimes a club thinks they’ve found the right fit when the club’s fans KNOW that they’re wrong.

another random thing, maybe even more ridiculous than Chelsea’s stubborness about Neymar, is that Ryan Giggs apparently is considering coming outta retirement to play for Wales again. Both that and this transfer possibility deserve the “wtf?” bit.

@Douglas…good point about him wanting a Brazil call-up and if his best chance of doing so is in Brazil then why not snub Chelsea…

My only problem is that Chelsea are so adamant about getting him (it seems) when he doesn’t seem a good fit for the club or competition.

I think everyone is right (how odd).

Neymar isn’t ready (and possibly never will) to play in such a physical game as the Brittish one.

That being said, he is also right in demanding to keep on having playing time because he’s on the verge of securing himself a first 11 spot on the renewed Brasil National Squad, so you really can’t blame him for not wanting to be forgotten in the next call ups.

@Brad…that’s what Neymar said – he’s not leaving Santos to play 2nd line with Chelsea. He wants a 1st team spot, which means Chelsea have to bump someone’s playing time from our 1st team for him? hahahahahahahahahaha… I could laugh all day about that one…obviously the kid thinks he’s learned enough and that’s his problem. A few more years to mature and then we’ll see where his head and weight is at. If you ask me tho, Chelsea should give up on Neymar and focus on talent that is right for the team.

I’m not either, great player, but self centered as you said. how could someone really be demanding to be put in FRONT of Drogba and Anelka? I would be happy just to be a teammate to guys like that. . . . and I agree with the “fly weight” part and being knocked around a LOT in the EPL, especially as I’m a “fly weight” myself. In fact, I get bowled over by guys a foot shorter than me (well, I have a high center of gravity, I’ around 6 foot 1, maybe 2 inches, so you can’t really blame me for that). . .
all in all, it still does come down to the part I said about blood and thunder vs flair and technical ability.

Anyone can play in the EPL if there is a will to play…but in listening to the great Brazilians of Europe talk about playing in England (and Europe), you get the impression that Brazilian players aren’t quite groomed for football outside of Brazil and it is up to the player themselves to learn and conform (and then excel too). That’s a huge risk and under-taking to some b/c on one end you are great b/c of everything you did in Brazil, but on the other hand, it’s not enough to get by in Europe so it’s almost like you have to learn it all over again, only this time it’s harder.

Robinho, Kaka, Maicon, Neymar…whoever – they can all play in the EPL if they want to, but I don’t think there is a will to play there b/c of the physical demands (and the weather and taxes I guess). Neymar is happy a club like Chelsea has shown interest, and i’m sure Chelsea is happy about the prospect of recruiting him, but he’s 18, he’s a fly-weight and he will get pushed around A LOT in the EPL. Mentally, and at 18, he might not be able to handle it and break down. He has it real good in Brazil right now so he should remain there b/c he’s not ready for Chelsea…a true student of the sport would always humble themself in order to learn, (case in point: CRonaldo under SAF’s wing) but Neymar demands playing time ahead of Anelka and Drogba which shows that he’s over-confident and too into himself to put the needs of the team before himself. I don’t think Neymar would be loyal to Chelsea, and Chelsea is no stepping stone, so i’m happier if he stays away from the Bridge. A great player but i’m not convinced that he’s a great teammate or has what it takes to survive in the EPL.

It doesnt matter whether or not Dos Santos is Brazilian descent or not, he’s been a total flop since he helped Mexico win a Youth World Cup a few years back.
Cold Turkey still has good points, seeing as Anderson (and I would know about that, seeing as I’m a Red Devil) and his predecessor (this shows just how much of a fail he was too, I can’t remember his name!, but Kleberson comes to mind).
so Brazilians like Kaka, Robinho, and Neymar wouldn’t cut it in the EPL, just like British players can’t cut it in SLL. The flair boys can’t really work in an area dominated by blood-and-thunder, physical play, and the physical blood and thunder can’t work in more technical, flair areas.

Look at some of the Brazilians who shined in the Premiere league… non

Brazillians in the EPL are just as good as English players in La Liga.

Just look at some of the big names who looked very promising but then flopped out..

Giovani Dos Santos, total flop had little imoact on Spurs..

Anderson, the dude who scored lots of goals at Porto and scored only 1 goal with United…

    Robinho, no need for explanation

It seems that only Brazilian defenders can succeed in the EPL (Rafael, Alex..)

No – i’ve seen Neymar’s highlight’s, and while he looks great, his opponents are garbage. He is great for Brazil, but I don’t think he’d cut it in the EPL. I really wish Chelsea would let go of this anyway…

To think we lost out on Silva, Balotelli, Toure, Boateng and even Milner…wow – and here we are kicking a dead-horse aka Neymar. Let him stay with Santos and let someone else pluck him. 30m for an unproven 18-yr old is nonsense – Barcelona were only willing to pay that for Cesc for crying out loud. I don’t know who’s doing the thinking up there Bucky!
