Saturday’s Premier League fixtures did not go according to plan for Tottenham Hotspur or Liverpool, but Manchester United and Chelsea will be satisfied to have taken three points from their respective games.
Tottenham Hotspur v. Wolverhampton Wanderers
As soon as Spurs drew level on points with Manchester United, Harry Redknapp’s side dropped two points after drawing 1-1 against Wolves in front of 36,194 home supporters at White Hart Lane.
For a team of Spurs’ quality, this is a horrendous result, but it’s not the end of the world.
Surely Harry Redknapp would have liked to go on and win the game after Luka Modric equalized in the 51st minute, but it just wasn’t meant to be for Tottenham.
Poor performances from Gareth Bale, Rafael van der Vaart and Emmanuel Adebayor led to Spurs dropping points at White Hart Lane for just the third time in 11 home games.
Liverpool v. Stoke City
Saturday was yet another scoreless game for Liverpool in the English Premier League.
The Merseysiders have bagged a meager 24 goals in 21 Premier League fixtures this season.
That means that Blackburn Rovers, who are 17th in the EPL table, have scored eight more goals than Liverpool.
In retrospect, Liverpool have conceded 18, while Rovers have allowed a stunning 44 goals.
Nonetheless, the Reds attacking woes must be resolved, especially since they will be without the services of talisman Luis Suarez for the near future due to his lengthy ban.
However, Liverpool did remain undefeated at Anfield in the Premier League in 2011-12, but four wins and seven home draws will not make the home supporters very happy.
Kenny Dalglish will surely look to bolster his attack in the transfer window, and rightfully so.
Manchester United v. Bolton Wanderers
With Tottenham Hotspur dropping two points, Manchester United moved level on points with Manchester City following a victory over Bolton on Saturday.
Despite Wayne Rooney missing a penalty in the first half, United defeated Bolton Wanderers 3-0 at Old Trafford, with Paul Scholes, Danny Welbeck and Michael Carrick all netting for the Red Devils.
Antonio Valencia was United’s most dangerous player throughout the game, while veterans Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand also shined for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.
For Bolton, defender Sam Ricketts had an absolute nightmare of a game. Let’s just leave it at that.
Once again, United did not really play up to their full potential, but they were certainly good enough to beat Bolton, which is not saying much to be perfectly honest.
In other words, Fergie’s side must improve their level of play if they wish to hoist the Premier League trophy in May.
Chelsea v. Sunderland
Andre Villas-Boas got a much needed victory, as Chelsea defeated Sunderland 1-0 at Stamford Bridge in front of over 40,000 Blues supporters.
Chelsea’s man of the match was undoubtedly Fernando Torres, who was quite brilliant for 90 minutes.
The Spaniard’s fantastic overhead kick led to Chelsea only goal after the ball struck the bar, only to ricochet off of Frank Lampard’s shin and end up in the back of the net.
In addition, Michael Essien came off the bench for his first action of the season and new signing Gary Cahill was in attendance at Stamford Bridge.
All in all, it was a great day for Chelsea.
